A few form questions... - 12/9/2004 14:15:14
Greetings all...

Background:
Site contains a public form located in the root folder of whose results are appended to an HTML file located in the \_private folder, and displays an HTML confirmation page containing several if not all fields submitted.

Very Simple.

I have been trying to replicate a randomly occurring problem with the form, but have been unable to do so reliably.

Every so often, when an end-user tries to submit the form, they get an error that the results.html file cannot be written to. TO resolve in the past, have enabled WRITE access to IUSR_WWW, and issue is "resolved."

Trying to uncover cause, and not having much success.

Questions:
1 - What NTFS USER account does FrontPage use to write to the \_private\results.HTML file (no login/authentication required on the site to access or submit said form)?
I set the form propoerties to inlcude USERNAME in the Saved Fileds, but no info is submitted.

2 - Where should the permissions for the \_private\results.HTML file be set - FPAdmin or NTFS? If in NTFS, should they be inherited from the parent folder (\_private), or set on their own?

3 - When Author edits the \_private\results.HTML file to remove old data and saves changes, does FrontPage reset any access permissions on the file? Is this version specific (FP2002 v. FP2003)?

Many thanks in advance to any and all who may be able to offer insight.

So a bit of a follow-up...

It would seem that the public form's ability to be successfully submitted depends on one of 2 NT accounts having WRITE permissions to the _results.html file:

IUSR_MachineName

-OR-

OWS_FPSiteNumber_Browser

In the possible combinations of Read / Read & Write / Write / Inherit Permissions form Parent, as long as at least one (1) of the accounts has write permissions, and it doesn't care which one, or if the permissions are inherited, then the form submits successfully.

Change them both to READ only, and it won't go through.

So that brings me back to the last variable I can come up with, and it's the different versions of FrontPage client (2002 v. 2003) being used to edit the _results.html files.

Film at 11....

Everyone...

Still having intermittant problems with this particular issue, meaning I can't relaibly replicate the problem, but it's still there.

THe interesting part is, that the permissions don't change on all of the results files in \_Private, and the ones it does happen to seem to be random.

What would be causing this?
