Giomanach -> Just wanting some opinions... (12/9/2004 16:26:14)

When I have the money....I'm looking to do some serious upgrades on PC...

Current Specs:

633Mhz Intel Celeron
Socket 370 Intel Motherboard (on board vid, sound, USB etc PCI Slot only, can only take upto 1Gb RAM)
Netgear 10/100 Ethernet Card
C-Media 4 Way Sound Card (Guys gotta have surround sound somehow)
80GB HDD Maxtor Diamond 9 Plus
Optorite CD-RW (52x24x52x)
16X DVD ROM
17" CRT Monitor
384Mb RAM (One 256MB and a 128MB)

Now...I'm looking at replacing Motherboard for a Socket 478, with onboard Ethernet, 8xAGP, able to take upto 3GB RAM, Radeon 9200 128MB Graphics Card....upgrading to 1GB RAM and a Celeron or P4 at 2.5-3Ghz...

When I have the cash...d'ay reckon that's gonna be a good set-up..or do you guys have any recommendations on hardware pieces?

Please...no fully built systems - don't trust 'em - and no AMDs - hate them...and try to keep it cheap...this guy dont have a big budget at the best of times...

Fire Away...

The only thing I'd recommend is stick with the P4 over the Celeron, and instead of the 9200 spend a little bit more and get a 9600.

The price on those has come down quite a bit since PCI-E came out... and its performance over the 9200 is worth the extra cash, IMO.

'Course... as long as you're upgrading the mobo, go for one that supports SATA drives and PCI-E. You can't go wrong with a 6800GT graphics card (under $200)

By the time you upgrade again there will probably be better selection for PCI-E mobos and cards tho
