Frontpage has stopped displaying a local web correctly. The theme elements(banners and nav buttons) have stopped appearing. The website works correctly on earthlink's server and works correctly on another machine where I installed Frontpage. This local web can have another theme applied and it will work but the original theme ( in this case Poetic) will not display correctly. Have ftpd the site to my local machine and it malfunctions locally even though content works on Earthlink server.

Any assistance much appreciated!

Did you FTP or did you "Publish"?

I FTPd the site to the server last week. At that point, the version in Front Page was OK, and it's OK on the web. The problem happened when I went to make minor type changes to the Front Page version. I made the changes, was ready to repost to the web when I noticed that the banners on each page and the nav bars and the backgroung image (a theme element) were missing. I tried to apply the theme again. No go. The missing stuff still didn't appear. But when I applied a different theme, it worked. (Of course, I don't want a different theme). This has happened with two webs that I created and update in Front Page.

Generally speaking, it is unwise to use ftp with a FrontPage web that depends on FPSE. Somehow the ftp process breaks the extensions, if not immediately, then at some later stage.

Are themes considered FP extensions? The server we post the site to doesn't support extensions but it continues to work ok. Even the back up copy I made to an external harddrive exhibits the same behavior in FrontPage. Is there a possiblity of some type of registry corruption on this machine?

No, and they don't require extensions on the server either.

Ah - then you mustn't be using any components that require FPSE. That is good. Sorry, it seems my warning was inappropriate in your case.

It is certainly possible. First thing I'd try is Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks.

If that doesn't fix things locally, I suggest you try a Help > Detect & Repair. You will need your installation disk handy as it will require it.

Another possible thing to try, is to create a brand-new, empty web locally (name it myweb2 or something different to the old one), then ftp the whole working site from the server to the new web. Including all the _vti folders.

If none of the above work, you might have to consider re-installing FrontPage.

Frontpage creates hidden folders which I think are turned off by default:

To display the hidden folders select:

Tools/Web Settings then click on the Advanced tab. Check the box under the heading of Options that says 'Show documents in hidden directories'

You need to make sure that these folders have also been ftp'd to the server particularly _overlay and _derived.

I've tried everything you suggested including re-installing FrontPage all to no avail.

I don't know whether this gives any further clues -the navigation buttons in the theme display correctly except the button for the current page one is in.

Also the derived and overlay folders appear to be present and intact.

When viewing the site locally, are you viewing it through a local web server program (IIS, Apache etc) or are you opening the files through Windoze Explorer?

I'm opening them through a local web server. When they are opened in Explorer they open correctly.

Do you mean Internet Explorer or Windoze Explorer?

If viewing through Windoze Explorer, it will not be viewed in the correct format, as you require a browser to do so.

I don't know if this will help but I have the same problem where all navagation and links are gone. I haven't had a chance to try this myself yet but Microsoft Knowledge Base Bulletin # Q198229 addresses losing navagation and themes when importing a web. It may help in restoring one too.
