...or phrase for when a customer continues to try to get you to add content to the site after you've finished it to their supposed satifactions, they've paid you and signed it off? I know there is a term/phrase for that. I feel as if I'm trying to be bled.

The term you are looking for may be "scope creep", but another term that comes to mind is "neglect". You neglected to have them sign a Maintenance Agreement, in which case you would have already been compensated for the updates they are requesting. [;)]

At this point, I would tell them politely "my hourly rate for updates or content additions is $X.00, but if you would like a maintenance agreement, it will save you money over the long term. The cost for that is $Y.00." [Insert your maintenance agreement contract terms here]

If you don't want to do their updates, offer to sell them a content management system so they can maintain it themselves.

Next time you sell a website, propose one of these options at the beginning and you won't have unpleasant situations like this one later. If you don't tell them updates and add-ons are extra, they WILL assume they're free.

Actually, I had them sign a very detailed contract that outlined what they agreed to at what price. They were required to a deposit of 50% of the site to secure my services. After the site was finished and they agreed via email, I sent them a Site Sign-off form that they signed that stated the site was agreed by both parties to be finished. I was paid the balance for the site. Should have been end of story.

Actually, I don't want to offer a maintenance agreement because I do not want to maintain any sites I finish. I'm a busy enough boy without maintaining the sites I make. It's agreed up front that, after being finished, the site belongs to the customer.

Would you consider offering to create the site as a dynamic web template a good alternative for both parties?

Maybe find someone who would. You get a referral fee one time. Everybody walks away happy.

Take care,

Brian

Good thought, Brian. [;)]
