Suggestions : What do you say when... - 12/14/2004 21:57:32
In this hyptothetical scenario... You agree to do work for a client in return for discounted products and distributorship rights of their products. At the beginning of this relationship, there are supposed to be small changes, additions, etc. however, as time goes on, you begin making multiple, small changes on the same project (e.g., grammar, etc.) and are sent say 10 photos to clean backgrounds from, when the client really prefers one or two to begin with. Even after repeated verbal and written notifications of needing XX lead time, the client is not respectful. You love the products, the opportunity the distributorship presents is phenominal, if only you had the time to market the products -- you are too busy with the clients multiple revisions and new work. WHAT do you say/do?

How much projected profit can be derived? If it supports it hand off the client to someone new starting out via outsourcing. Pay them, the freelancer working on task orientated requests, a reduced maintenance rate. You keep the relationship this way and the wholesale channel opportunity. I had this very issue with a site of mine. I lost them. For me I ws short sited, I don't admit that one too often, I chose to drop this wholesaler as maintaining their site was too much. Before I did I thought I would try to convert them on issue at hand. I pointed out scope creep, they did not understand as they were only small changes (multiples). I made a Word doc that illustrated the flow from them sending me an e-mail request all the way to the point when things were done being my "completion" e-mail. They even stated "Wow, just to update one page or make that photo really stand out takes all these steps?". I thought I had won (relative term). Next thing I knew they dropped me from wholesale which broke my supply, which started the downfall of the site. They had found a new person willing to work sans money for the wholesale relationship. It comes down to ROI in my mind and how bad you want/need them. Take care, Brian
