web newbie - 12/15/2004 7:30:09
Hi,

I have just created my first website and am having several problems...

1) none of my hover buttons work!
2) i am having problems uploading some of my pictures with errors like:

Server Error: Write error on File ".wedding3.jpg.tmp".

Any ideas?

:)

Thanks

Andrew

Welcome to OF. :)

If you've used FP to make your site then I assume you're using Publish to get the site onto your host?

Have you also made sure that you have FrontPage extensions enabled on the host?

Hi,

Thanks for responding!

Yes I've upgraded my package so that I can use frontpage to publish via my broadband connection!

I have now scrapped my hover buttons, and this now seems to work, all i need to work out is how to get my remaining pcitures onto my site...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Andrew

Well I can't see the code for your page as it's in frames, however looking at the site, some of your pics have uploaded OK. I would suggest you look closely at the pics on your machine. For example, compare wedding3 which won't upload with wedding 1 which has. What's different?

Check the folders, the pic names and the hyperlinks within FP.

The original message you posted said .wedding3.jpg.tmp

That is a completely invalid name. If you've managed to call it that somehow then it won't work.

I have compared the naming conventions, sizes etc etc and there appears to be no obvious reason for the pictures not uploading.

I am so puzzled!

You're puzzled! Imagine what I'm thinking and I can't see what's on your machine! :)

OK, lets try

1. make sure all the wedding pics are held in the same folder.
2. make sure they're all called blahblah.jpg (all lowercase, no spaces etc)
3. go into the wedding page, delete out the hyperlinks and re-do them
4. upload again
5. refresh your cache and then check the site out.

Refresh your cache.

Your machine stores copies of sites and pages that you visit. When you update a page you may well still be seeing the old one stored in your cache. Unlikely in this case but worth a try.

To refresh the cache for the page hold down CTRL and press F5.

I'll go check your fixes out now and get back in a mo.

OK, something's different, the pictures aren't hyperlinking at all. If I hover over the first 2 the cursor changes to a hand, the third one gives me an error, the rest I get nothing.

Check out your links again.

Hold on, are any of your images on your host called JPG instead of jpg?

Your host is Unix and it can tell the difference whereas FrontPage can't.

Try uploading the pictures using an FTP client instead. Just the missing pictures though. Leave the rest of the site alone.

You can get a free ftp at http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ ( Download and documentation links are on the left of the page. ) It works just like Windows explorer, you see the host in one frame and your machine in the other and you can drag and drop the files.

Make absolutely sure you're dragging them into the right place though. Again, your host should have told you where that is - on mine it's a folder called html or www, so find your index.html file and that's the start of your web site, all your other files and folders should be within that folder.

You'll need the FTP info which your host should have sent you in your joining email. If not, contact the host and ask them.

Do not, I repeat, try and use this for the whole site, FP will have uploaded hidden files that you'll miss if you try it.

In FF; Right click/This frame/View frame source.

Am I right in thinking that the problem is not evident on the website just when you are uploading?

Have you tried renaming the files with a completely different name?

Have you checked in your images folder using windows explorer to see if there are any strangley named additional files, i.e. copies with the extra .tmp extension. Sometimes your graphics program will add an extension automatically so if you also type it in manually you get two.

Noticed that the picture on the home page (the one that say's DYER) had a space in the file name and it was 260 KB. WAY too large - took so much time to display I finally gave up and didn't look for any more photos. Still lots of people that can only get 28k on their modems.
That may be part of your problem in getting the other pics to display. They may be too large and taking too long to show up. (and spaces in the file names don't help either)

Please, Please Please optimize your photos before uploading them to your server. Your viewers will appriciate your web site much more if you do.

Dan

Go into the Wedding page and click on the thumbnails.

For some reason it's just not happy uploading these pics.

Having read Don's post I'm now wondering whether there is a size restriction on upload or whether it's not loading fully.

Andrew, are the ones you're having trouble with significantly larger than the others? Did they all come from the same camera, scanner, graphics package?

If it's not that then I suggest your next port of call is your host to see if they have any ideas.

After that, if you're still nowhere then email me and we'll try playing around with the graphics. Assuming you can mail them without your computer blowing up! :)

Something else that just occurred............. given that you have a number of large photos make sure you haven't exceeded your web space.

Looking through the web on an empty cache, I see no visble problems, apart from a JS error on the nav, so:

quote:

given that you have a number of large photos make sure you haven't exceeded your web space.

Should be the ansewer to your problem....

PS...optimising images usually helps on that part too....

How do I optimise my pictures?

All the pcitures are similar sizes and were all scanned in using the same scanner at the same dpi etc.

I don't think I am near my upload limit although depsite being asked my host will not directly answer my question!

My hosting company are a complete nightmare and keep telling me to just rename my files to not include the .tmp ending despite me explaining to them several times that they are not called that and I can find no reference in my code to anything with a .tmp ending...

I have suggested to my host that i email the files to them to place in the correct location to make the links work and am waiting for their response with a suitable email address if agreeable!

I really am bamboozled why these files cannot be uploaded!

Ok... I've found a program to optimise my pictures!

So the pciture on the front page soon load faster now, and I've tried doing the same for the wedding pictures, but they still keep trying to add a .tmp ending on and give me the same error message!

:)
