Download File and Submit Form Info - 12/16/2004 12:22:38
Hi. I am extremely new to web design. I am starting my own business and didn't have the funds to pay a pro...so tackled it myself. Anyway, I did get it up and running. I'm sure that it could use a tremendous amount of improvement...but here it is http://q-sol.com.

What I need to know is how to make the "Submit" button (on the "Download Brochure" and "Download Demo" pages) download a file in addition to sending me the form info (which already works). Can you help me?

There are several ways to go about it...

It looks like you want people to send you their info before they get the form, but not have to push any extra buttons to get it?

I would create a thank you page. In form properties in FP you can indicate a specific page where the visitor is directed to thank them after submitting the form...

On that page, I would put some text that says Thanks, etc. and your download should begin momentarily...

I would then add the following meta tag:

<META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" Content="10;URL=filetodownload.xtn">

That will redirect the browser to the download file after 10 seconds... you can change the 10 to be any number of seconds, and change filetodownload.xtn to the name of the file you want them to download.

Do this for each of the forms and test it out... it should work...

:)

Bobby,
Thanks for your quick response. I tried to follow your instructions, but like I said, I'm a real novice. I created a thank-you page for each of the pages that I want to download from...and was successful at making those come up when the "Submit" button is pressed. But then I get an error message as follows, "Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions on this page: "Q-Pulse brochure 2004.pdf"".

I don't know what I'm doing on the HTML page. I just entered the line you provided me with, on a blank line on the HTML page of the Thank-you page. Was that where I was supposed to put it? When I saved, Frontpage moved the line up toward the top of the page.

I am also not sure about the file name format. What I did with the files (one PDF and one .exe for a Flash demo) was to put them in the "Private" folder. But in the line you provided me, I entered the file name and extension only (no path). More help please?
Thanks

The Meta tag I gave you should go in the top of the <head> in your page (look at code/html view).

There will be a couple of Meta tags already there... just paste this in after the ones that are already in place...

You will need to include the full file path in order to be redirected properly... make it directory/filename - you may need to put them in a different directory (not sure the _private dir will allow access)

Hi 1st Timer,

I think Bobby is right, I wouldn't put it in the _private folder.

Bobby, nice tip by the way. I never knew how to do that with the meta tag. Thanks.

It's not recommended to use it on most pages... SE's will usually ignore a page that has this Meta in it... but since this is a thank you / confirmation page... that's not a problem.

In fact it may be a benifit... to keep SE's from finding the download page without a visitor filling in the form data...
