Prevent accessing certain files without going through a... - 12/16/2004 14:13:09
This is to do with the problem I had not long ago which I named as "hotlinking". Now what I want is the following: I had a file on my server and I don't want anyone to access it unless they click a link on a certain page.

Index [LOGIN]--> "certain page" with link to file --> Access file

Is there any script or HTACCESS method of doing this???
Thanks

In ASP (or any scripting language) you can password protect the page that holds the link to the file... then a password will be required to get there.

If you only want one universal password, that's easy... if you want everybody to have their own password (or have multiple ones) you'll want something like Spooky Login

Keep in mind that this will not keep somebody from linking to your file if they are able to get the file path to it... in other words, once they find out what the file path is, the password protection will not protect the file itself... only the page with the link.

If you're on an NT server you might be able to create a new, password protected directory that will require a user name and password... but I'm not sure if that will give you what you want either...?

I have downloaded spooky now. But I don't know what do with it, how to personalise it and how to include it in my webpage, so if for once and for all someone tells me what to do... Cause everyone here seems to know how to operate it immediately, must be i'm a bit stupid, cause i havent found any post related to this problem...

Couldn't you use a submit button on a form using the POST method? If you kept the file in the database then the only way to get to it would be to click the button..?

I think that's right.
