Giomanach -> Reading Server Identity Reports (12/18/2004 19:35:23)

Have noticed some of you are finding these a bit difficult to understand, so I will explain, section by section what they are, and how to interpret them.

First of all, you should be aware that these reports are only there for information purposes, and dependant on the engine used, can be very unreliable.

The most reliable one, that I have found to date, is http://dnswiz.com/fptype.htm

To use it, merely typ the domain name and the relevant suffic i.e. giomanach.com blue being the domain name, and the red being the suffix. You do not need anything else. If referring to an IP address, enter the IP address, no need for the prefix of www.

When checking web addresses that look like so: 258.268.258.142/~username you will not get the desired result. As that will tell you that will only give you the server type, if at all.

Reading & Understanding The Results

WWW Site: www.giomanach.com
This is the URL that you entered, no explanation should be needed for this bit.

Port: 80
By default, this port is used to access all webs via FP publish, and by browsers from an external source. This will not change, and doesn't affect any of you who do not manage your own servers

Server Software: Apache/1.3.33 (Unix) mod_gzip/1.3.26.1a mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_ssl/2.8.22 OpenSSL/0.9.7a PHP-CGI/0.1b
The software installed on the server. This will vary dependant on your server type. it will only show what is installed on your server, and what can be enabled, nothing more, nothing less.

The Above details show that the server is an Apache based server, on a Unix Platform, Shared server, with Authent mode access, all access is logged, bandwidth is limited, FPSE exist, but are not enabled, Shared SSL Cert, PHP enabled. You should not need to really understand this, unles you are the Server Administrator

Sometimes this will say "This Server Does Not Disclose It's Identity" - This merely means that the host has disabled the Identity broadcasting feature, and has implemented some advanced security measures, for your benefit, and not theirs.

FrontPage Extensions: NO
The result these reports are mainly used for. You will get two results, but with three answers. the results can be Yes or No. The three ansers are:

Yes - FPSE are installed, and are functioning
No - The Are not installed, they will need installing if you want to use FP
No - The Server Does Not Disclose Identity, and there is no way of telling from an external source if they are....what a bummer...

When To Use The Reports
To be plain and simple about it - When FrontPage Publishing does not work, or your web stops functioning, this should be your first port of call, instead of panicing, and FTPing you changes to the site, as this will only cause more problems

If there are any questions upon this, please post them, I am also open to being corrected
