800 by 600 screen resolution - 12/19/2004 22:45:18
For the longest time either at work or at home, my screen resolution has always been 800 x 600.

And that is how I have been developing my web pages.

However, I have cranked up the resolution and noticed a stark difference on my web pages. What I thought were cool web pages were now hideous in a few areas.

I went to a number of my favorite commercial sites and I was surprised on how well they held up at higher screen resolutions.

Anyway, does any know the averages on what most users use for their screen resolution.

I do agree that the higher screen resolutions produce a finer image I could not see myself trading off such small text and images for better resolution.

Am I safe at 800 x 600 or am I screwed???

Hi,

I found a web site that makes this claim about % of users with each resolution:
quote:

1024x768 is the most popular resolution used (getting the lions share of around 60%) followed by 1280x1024 and above (around 25%) and 800x600 (around 14%). 98% of users have 800x600 and above resolution, thus, 800x600 can be taken as the minimum resolution the site should fit (other lower resolution are seldom used).

But those figures are broad and can vary enormously depending on who your target audience is. For instance a site selling high-end video equipment will have a target audience that has the latest technology (usually). But one aimed at school students should design for 800x600 as schools rarely have the finances to upgrade quickly.

Best of course, is a fluid layout that adjusts pretty well to all resolutions.
