violaactuary -> internet explorer not working correctly (12/28/2004 13:00:21)

OK Here goes.
IE page always goes to address http:/// no matter what I type in. Yes you saw that correctly 3 /'s. I have checked ie options/properties, told it to reset to default although I did not see anything weird. Anyone know how to fix this? The page seems to load originally (for example if I type msn.com, it will begin to load the page) then at the last second go to this http:///

Any ideas for help? Hubby is a school teacher and he is off for the week and going crazy without internet :) I have gone to microsoft help and did not see anything...

Thank you!

are you clean vis-avis spyware, trojans, worms viruses etc?
have you tried another browser - like firefox?

I ran adaware with latest update. I always use the online Trend Micro virus scan which I cannot get to now bc the page won't load. I don't have any other virus protection.

I don't know how to get any other browser on my computer without going to a page and downloading it... I"m on my work computer now, so I suppose I could download something here and execute the program at home?

If, after reinstalling IE the problem still exists then you may have suffered a browser hijack, as dpf indicated.

Go here and look in the Browser Hijacks and spyware problems forum, where you will see that http:/// is symptomatic of a hijack.

You will get help there to do the necessary cleaning.
Good luck,
Carol

Thanks everyone. Do I have to reinstall ie from my original disks or can I get a download from another computer? Obviously the version has gone up since the purchase of the computer a few years ago.
I will read the page you suggest and let you know if I have any questions. Thanks again!

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is the latest version of Internet Explorer and includes a full installation of the Web browser. This update addresses the vulnerability addressed in Knowledge Base Article 326489. To learn how to get additional security updates, see the Overview section

OK, went to microsoft downloads and found the above; it says that it includes a full installation of the web browser, so do you think I can just save this to disk/cd and then run it on my computer at home to reinstall? And do I need to delete or uninstall ie on my computer before running this?

Thanks again in advance...

From IE help -

quote:

To uninstall Internet Explorer

If you encounter problems that you cannot resolve, it is often beneficial to uninstall Internet Explorer and then reinstall it. This procedure replaces files that might have been damaged.

In Windows, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Notes

If you are using Windows XP, click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
If you upgraded to Internet Explorer 6, when you uninstall Internet Explorer 6, you will go back to the version of Internet Explorer that was on your computer before you upgraded

My own personal view is that you should download the Firefox browser from
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
and throw IE out of the window(s). [;)] But that is only my opinion...

You could use the disk that you saved - I think, but am not too sure about that. Alternatively you could get a computer magazine which has browsers on the free cd that often comes with them. Some of them are even including Firefox these days.

Thank you all!

I was able to do a system restore to get my ie back up running. Then I was able to run my virus scan. Took care of a few things there. Also downloaded firefox so I will install that tonight. I will be thrilled to throw ie out the window :) lol

Thanks again- I'm sure I will be back.

system restore

Ooooo...errrrr...Turn that off....

That is a cause of no end to problems, it;s the perfect hidey hole for virii, as most AV systems can't scan it etc etc, and most of all, it hogs precious HDD space....

Even my friend Lori will tell you that[:)]

You will love Firefox - when you get used to it.
Enjoy.[:D]
