JavaScripts & JBots floating window problem ... - 3/20/2001 20:46:00
I'm not sure how to describe this, its not really a problem so much as a add on I wish to do to the JBots floating window. Can it be done is the better question.

The effect I am trying to add is that when you use the on load for the floating window in JBots and you have made the window htm file as a separate page, Is it possible to create the effect that is done here:

http://htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/beyond/Test3.html

and at the hispeed.com website for the search engine under there member services area.

I like the idea that when I make a link in the popup window htm file it would use the original browser window to forward to the page versus making a new browser target on the link.

Is this a feature that JBots could add to its floating menu for say JBots 2001? I'd love to have this option and am afraid to get it to work I will have to use the script the way they have it written.

I am a huge JBots fan, the scripts are all over my site, so am hopeful someone can come up with a solution on how to get this to work with the JBots floating window.

Thank you,

Marian Pena

That's a cool effect, but it's not an effective way to deal with navigation.

My browser actually hid the popup. It took me a while to see that there was another window open underneath the main window.

Popups are frought with browser compatiblity issues. And users tend to get very confused by any use of popup windows. Using them for navigation can really perplex your visitors. They can accidentally close the window or accidentally hide it.

You should be able to set the target window of the popup window to whatever you want, but I don't think you should.

I agree, they suck for navigational purposes.

I really do know all the pitfalls of popup windows, but if used correctly and I believe mine are since they are not for use as advertisements, and people have the option also to not use it (course they won't see the tutorial page if they don't) (hehee)

My intention is not to use it for naviagation necessarily, but to prevent the additional opening of new browser windows because that is what I would have to do otherwise, and having frames on my site, I'd prefer to "link" back to the original browser window. My popup windows are something I use for tutorials for the most part and for downloads. Since the window is not large enough to make the link a normal target, it makes sense to take them back to original window versus opening a new window.

I did happen to find a solution to this at irt.org where I can still use JBots for the floating window effect, but on the link back just adding a javascript line to the link does the job nicely.

For some reason when I asked yesterday, I thought the popup window for Jbots would be affected.

Thomas, while your here, would you know what I am doing wrong on the rainbow.html page of my site where I have a random image with urls on each using the Jbots affect. It seems the pictures do not open the url and that bothers me since the pictures are there because they were contest winners.

the url is http://www.mirc-rainbow.com/rainbow.html

I am sure I added the urls, and the coding shows I did, but for some reason they do not open the urls.

Thanks again,

Marian
