Should It Stay, Or Should It Go... - 1/1/2005 9:51:46
Bout time I threw something at you lot to bash...

http://giomanach.com/new

OK, I need to redesign my web to allow for the addition of Hosting, I gots the servers, may as well use 'em

You know what to do..

Changes?
Does it render alright?
Tested in - IE6, FF1.0, Opera 7.54 and it looks like it should, what bout the rest of 'em?

All links are dead, no content - deliberate

I just want critiques on the design, not the rest of it

Oh, and it's valid XHTML 1.0 Trans and Valid CSS (no warnings)

I don't think it is a good idea to make users scroll down the home page to find the navigation.

I think that's by design but it doesn't work for me.:) At the very least I'd have the text run vertical...

etc., I hate having to put my ear on my shoulder to read something.:)

Dan - If there's way to do it with CSS, let me know, otherwise, Mike is right, that is the way it's supposed to be.

Shirley - I've tried other places, but to me it just looks out of place, will have a look at where else it can go again.

Mike - That's just lazeeeee:), I'll see what I can do tho:):)

What you apologising for?:)

I wasn't expecting people to say, yeah that's fine, leave it as, is go put some content in it - wouldn't be right if you lot did...

Just means I'll have to either (a) rotate it to a horizontal nav or (b) change the lettering direction, as Mike has suggested

Just wondering where-else to put the nav, so it ain't at the bottom...

Dan, maybe this is while you're messing with it...but there's a big blue box that is just empty between "Imagination of" and "Giomanach". It looks very awkward, weird...I'd be wondering what's missing.

I agree with the consensus on the vertical text...I think I'd like it if you do it like Mike suggested.

I don't really like that brown globe...it reminds me of an old hair brush that used to spank me. lol

Hi Dan,

Tell me, would you ever talk to me again if i told you it looks like a mistake? I mean, to me, it looks like it's supposed to look like something else, but just didn't render in my browser correctly.

Maybe you're just way ahead of your time? lol

Sorry

Nicole

doesn't work.

the nav though different is always going to be less usable than traditional ones. i like the globe wotsit.

copyright is last years! needs to be 2004-2005 ;)

there's something in this idea but it's not working as it is...

how about nav at the top?

:)

That blue box, and the white one below it are for content - the emptyness is deliberate, i'm wanting people to give opinions on design, and it looks like no-body likes it...lol

Ironically, that's a volcanoc surface on the sphere, I was thinking about making that area a PHP script to change that image every time the page loads...

It's an opinion, so yes I will still talk to you:)

I ain't got that far yet!

I liked it on it's side...oh well..back to the drawing board with that then....

Took me longer to render it than it did to create it:)

OK, the general consensus here is that the Nav don't work, color scheme is alright, not every browser will play with it.

Other than Nicole, did anyone else get any rendering problems? Nicole - could you also lemme see a screenshot of the page?

It's different and I quite like it but I fell off the chair trying to read the nav bar.

Neck brace anyone? :)

I didn't get rendering problems!

What i was saying was that it looked like it didn't render properly, but that was your design?

The designs gonna change...ish...

I was trying to follow the natural eye pattern of reading a page; the circular motion from top left to bottom left. Oh well, that went the dogs didn't it...

Oooh, so...Mondrian

It seems that only jaybee is into post-impressionist art.

Remarks about the placement and content of the nav do however have accessibility implications. On a purely personal level, I too don't like the volcano - too harsh an image.
But I do like the Mondrian influence, so retro.

Looks like it should be a flash movie instead of an html page. The menu needs to be flipped too.

I don't quite like it, but it is mainly because of the menu. http://www.giomanach.com/ looks great the way it is.

I need to implement a hosting area, and the current design doesn't really lend itself for that, and I can't find the font used in the nav on the original design....

And yes, FLASH is good, but no, I have to work by accessibility laws in this country, and FLASH, I don't think, falls as accessible...

No doubt Carol will have something to say on that...

Dan (Giomanach),

I love it! It looks great, but i also feel the same as the other Dan, i think it should all be visible from the start, at least for those using 1024 x 768 and above.

I guess you're going to fill that white space in with something, is that where the dragon's going? If not, can that be shortened and maybe a piece of sky removed to make it all fit the page?

The dilemma Dan and Jaybee mention about your name (and everything important) being at the top is a problem, and it's why i made my business site with frames where the footer is always visible. Not suggesting you use frames but it's how i got around the problem of wanting my business name not at the top yet wanting it always visible.

I have the image I want to use (click here to view - where've you seen that before? :)), that pic needs editing tho...

Have found a flaw in IE6 and below with it...so need to sort that out...

So, my name at the top eh? Ok, I'll just move it to the top right, above the sky =)

My problem is, I have a 17" TFT @ a natural res of 1280x1024...it's also the main reason why I put it here...see what people at the lower resolutions can see:)

//pootles off to do some work...

Dan

Looks good in IE and FF at my end.

But I'd use about 10px padding for the "contenttop" and "contentbottom" to make things look more even and user friendly. Appears a bit cramped now.
