fhenkel -> Help moving SharePoint (1/4/2005 9:05:16)
I have been given a new server for our Intranet sites and they are SharePoint sites on a 2000 box, SharePoint 1.0 and SQL Server 2000. The new setup will be 2003 Server, SharePoint Services 2.0 and MSDE. My question is how to move the sites from one server to another. The item is that the database will not be moving with us. I have already "published" the sites to a local drive but my question is will publishing them back up to the new server do anything in relation to the new database which will need to be built or will I just need to regenerate all new sites?
If that is the case I have a couple thousand documents and files to all be relinked to a new database. If anyone knows of a Microsoft document on this? I'm sure someone has had to do this already. Any help would be appreciated.

Why is the old DB not moving across?
If you make the new DB the same name, same DB tables set-up, then you shouldn't have any problems, but it would be easier to takle the DB with you, that make a new one, unless you make it to the exact same specs as the previous one.

Reason for not moving or copying the SQL database is that there are a bunch of other website on the old server and I'd like to start out fresh with a new one using only MSDE which SharePoint v2.0 installs.
I'm wondering how Frontpage would handle "publishing" it from one server to the new one and if it would create all the database info needed to be up and running quickly. Other than that I guess I'll have to recreate the whole site....
