Comments/suggestion re my web sites - 1/4/2005 21:25:02

I am a newbie at web design. I have two sites, one in Australia, and one in the U.K. I would welcome comments or suggestions for improving them. I have learned a lot from the very helpful people on these forums already. Thanks!
Cheers.

On the second link the first thing I see is RED, RED, and more RED... wow do you like red? Try using some other features in FP to highlight areas of intrest. Didn't really read too much because I couldn't get over the red.

In the first link I couldn't get past the contrast of colors... are you seeing a pattern here. Colors say alot and either they keep people on your site or have them running to another site.

Hope this helps,
CA

Hi Christopher,

With the Australian site - I'm not a huge fan of font-backgrounds, you have a skyblue background around paragraph headings which may look better without a background, i'd also take the bold off the normal text within the site. This will also make your headings stand out without putting a background on them. I didn't click every link, but did notice that the body font is sometimes verdana and sometimes times new roman, this should be consistent throughout the site. I'd also use a bigger font for your "Welcome to St. John's Anglican Church, The Parish Church of the City of Cairns Corner of Lake and Minnie Streets" and actually i'd only put the church name up there and put the other parish info and address under it in smaller font.

The UK site - I like better than the other one, but the fonts used for titles etc will have to be made into images if you want others to view them the same. Otherwise they'll just show up in Times New Roman. It's easy to do in Paint Shop Pro if you have it. The tables in the "Parish" page went off my screen, meaning a horizontal scrollbar, try making your tables a percentage width rather than a pixel width to correct this.

I think the are very accessable and straightforward which is great considering your audience.

For the St. John's you should resample your pictures that are on the top border. The church is very fuzzy and the Christ is rather dark and stretched out looking.

For the St. Luke it would be nice to add some images to break up the solid band of color.

Thank you so much for replying and commenting on my sites.

Just Questions: Yes I like red! What can I say? It seemed like a good idea at the time. Sadly while I can muddle through the technical stuff I am not artistic. I do agree that it is too much and I will change the colours as soon as I can come up with another combination of colours that I like. I only hope I don't make it worse! Your comments helped. Thank you.

Nicole: The font backgrounds are gone, the bold on all but the headings are gone, and all the text is now Verdana. You are absolutely right. It looks miles better than before. I will take up your suggestion about the banner as well. At the moment the home page is a little crowded with the three tsunami appeal links, the invitation to the Bishop's bash, plus the service times. So I will have to do a redesign of the home page before putting any more text there.

Re the UK site. I had not realised I had not enabled the slider. I will correct that and play around with the percentage widths.

Would you mind elaborating please? Do you mean titles like the banner, and "diary" etc? I can do it because I have paint shop pro. I am just not sure which titles you mean. I really appreciate your help.

Gibbon: Thank you also for your helpful comments. I am aware of the issues with those pics. They were the first ones I had ever resized. I am much better at it now, and also have some great photo software that I have learned to use properly to lighten and re-shape images so those changes you mentioned have gone on my to do list. Regarding breaking up the red of St. Luke's site see my comments above.

To think I thought it would be enough to learn the technical stuff. It seems I should take an art class, or better, maybe a design class!

Thank you all again for your time and comments. Very much appreciated.

Christopher.

You'll get there slowly. My first site, as discussed on these boards previously, is something I am delighted has gone to the great web site in the sky.

Best tip I can give you is check out the site critiques on here regularly. You'll pick up all sorts of tips from comments about other people's sites. Something I regularly do is google for templates and then have a good look at them. Take screen shots of ones I like and file them for later inspiration.

Go look at the web award sites. Don't expect to be able to copy them as often they're cutting edge and pretty inaccessible but they give you colour and layout ideas.

Thanks for those tips and most of all thanks for the words of encouragement. I shall have a look around the web for inspiration. I will be in Kingston soon and will come face to face with my audience. I hope that they don't take revenge for all that red by throwing rotten tomatoes at me! <grin>

Hi Christopher,

With the heading for the page "St. Luke's", i meant that you've written it into the html in font "Copperplate Gothic Bold" and it looks okay to you and I because we both have that font loaded in our computers. Most people don't load different fonts into their computers so to them it will default back to a font like "Times New Roman".

Follow this link for a list of Standard Windows Fonts

I've quickly created a banner in Paint Shop Pro just to show you the sort of thing you can create. Open a new file, choose your font style and colour, size etc and experiment. To put a shadow around the text, choose 3D effects - drop shadow, if you wish to.

Thanks for that Nicole. I understand what you are getting at now. That list of fonts will be useful to have. I will have a play around in Paint Shop Pro and see what I can come up with. Thanks again for your help.
