When I display it I see the lettering, the black shadowing, and a completely white background. I don't see the black background. I loaded it into PS and see it. Probably you used the "Save for Web" option. In creating the image PS adds the white as an outline to the drop shadow so it won't blend into the background. Use "Save as" instead.

set the background thee same colour as the target page and then pick *that* colour as the transparent colour. see http://members.tiscali.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/examples/button_backgrounds.htm (it's done in fireworks but it's the same principle in PS and then to image ready
