I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry - 1/7/2005 12:46:21
I have spent the past 2 years worrying only about code and functionality. As far as design, I have usually used one of Thomas's templates as I am artistically very challenged. Now I have been given an assignment at work to redo a site, including the graphics. Oh the horror!

So now I find myself head first in Photoshop and although I am making some progress, I can't seem to find the answers on how to do some of the most basic of tasks. Here is the latest:

I am creating a new graphic which will combine text and two existing graphics that I have in .gif format. In Image Composer, I can simply insert my .gif into the project. In Photoshop, I would like to place the .gif onto its own layer but cannot for the life of me see how to insert an existing .gif into my .psd.

I assume this can be done, can't it? If so, please point me in the right direction.

Ive never used PS but I am sure it can be done..PSP does it easily. layers are a standard function of graphics software.

That is exactly where I was 6 months ago.. i spent a lot of time on PSP and fireworks - you will be amazed at how far you can grow with it...

Open the gif (in PS), and then a simple copy & paste will do the trick.

If you want Duane...drop me a PM and I'll do it, free of charge?

Thanks Dan. In this particular case the learning what I am doing is much more important to me than the task at hand. I opened the file in PS but cannot see how I would go about copying and pasting. If I click Edit, copy is greyed out. I am sure it is something basic, but sadly I don't seem to find PS all that intuitive. I am using PS 7 if that helps any. I am attaching the graphic that I am trying to paste onto its own layer in case someone can see a problem with it.

When on the gif, press Ctrl+A, and then copy will be highlighted in the Edit Menu

Told you it had to be simple. I was also able to do it by using the selection tools. Easy, but in my case not intuitive. Thanks a bunch for the help.

if you convert it to rgb from indexed (Image > mode > rgb) then you can just use the move tool (the little black arrowhead with cross next to it) and drag it from one document window into another (assuming the other window is in rgb)

Duane,

Forum member Lori Leach does a beautiful job of designing all her sites completely in PhotoShop - see http://www.zenfulcreations.com/ . I've spoken to her on the phone and she's done some graphic art work for me - a very giving and knowledgeable person. I'm sure she'll provide detailed guidance if you ask.

Thanks Larry for the "mention" - been a while since I talked to you - I hope you are well!!

Duane - If there is anything I can do to help you out - let me know!

On this - in particular - if you were trying to edit the text of a .gif file, that cannot be done. Those are not editable.

However, if you just wanted to put an existing .gif onto another graphic, as was said before, you choose IMAGE>>MODE>>RGB COLOR.

Then SELECT>>SELECT ALL EDIT>>COPY

Go to the image you want to paste to, and then EDIT>>PASTE.
