Whats up with Aol's Compression - 3/24/2001 20:32:00
Is there some kind of code that can be written into a page to keep AOL from optimizing my jpegs. Its insane! The images look gourgeous on NN,IE and Opera yet many of them look like crap on AOL. When it compresses my image, sometimes the image is a third of the size of my optimized file. Is there a solution here besides making larger file sizes or having to tell users to turn of the compression feature. Thanks, Baffled

Do you have a URL? I've seen all my pages in AOL and none of them have compressed images, so I'm a bit confused about just what you mean.------------------ <--Your information went data way -->

Yes it is insane! Nothing that you can do that I know of...... The only redeeming factor is that the OAHell users will probably not be able to tell the difference since all sites will look equally bad! I'm still puzzled Shirley, because I have AOL on my computer just to check such things. I got an AOL account for my computer illerate parents who live 2000 miles away and can log on as needed to test sites. Anyway, I'd never thought about AOL graphics compression until you mentioned it, so I looked at my settings and they are set to "Always compress graphics", yet everything looks just fine. As Rian correctly pointed out, anybody using compressed graphics on AOL who is seeing less than perfect images is probably used to seeing sites this way. ------------------ <--Your information went data way -->

Hi Michael Is it possible you are looking at cached copies of the sites in AOL since AOL is using IE as it's default browser? That happenend a few times to me while testing in AOL. If not.....WooWeee! You are one of a very few AOHell users/testers that see anything resembling the original site! Rian PS. Maybe uhhmmm..eeerrrr...your AOL copy is just"broken"? ------------------ Webmaster SR Web Creators http://www.srwebcreators.com _ _________________ _ "Press ENTER once to quit or twice to save changes..." _ ________________ _

In addition, if you make any changes to your AOL settings, they have a problem with showing the changes. This applies to changes made to the actual content of the website itself as well as "browser" settings. When I was mastering a web w/ AOL, I wouldn't see any changes for anywhere between 4 hours to 2 days, regardless of how much I cleaned out history, temp. Internet files, caches, EVERYTHING. I'd make changes, look at it w/ AOL, then look at it w/ another ISP; 2nd one would show changes, AOL wouldn't. AOL's use of the technology to see the Internet is faulty and quite possibly illegal, as they screw with everything before it hits your browser. I was appalled when I found out about some of the stuff they did, and I read in Network World (or whatever that big magazine is, I forget exact name) that the board in charge of the Internet standards and protocols (forget the acronym for them, too...but I'm not stupid, I swear) was having a serious problem with how they were doing things too.
