uploading links - 1/9/2005 6:44:22
Hi, I've created a small web site in Frontpage2002. When i simulate the site off line, all the links work great. When i upload the site and assosiated folders, all the links relate back to the files on my hard drive - not the new ones ive just uploaded.

Any feedback would be greatly appriciated.

WELCOME to Outfront forums :)

Did you start by creating your site in a FrontPage Web, i.e. does the folder have a globe symbol on it when you view it in Windows Explorer?

Well that is the primary cause of your difficulty.

You always need to create a "FrontPage" web before you start building your site, even if you don't intend to use Frontpage for publishing or any proprietary features.

Try opening Frontpage with the Views bar showing and the Folder List on the LHS. In the folder list, right click on the folder which contains your web site and choose "Convert to Web".

Then go to the menu bar and click Tools > Recalculate hyperlinks. Then publish.

This process may or may not fix your problem. If it doesn't please come back for further suggestions.

Hi, Thanks the help.

I've gone in and started a new frontpage web site. Can you clarify how to move everything accros to this file and recalculate the links.

OR even easier, how do i correctly create and build a link?

To bring in your files, open your new web, go to menu bar >> File >> Import.

To recalculate hyperlinks, go to the menu bar and click Tools >> Recalculate hyperlinks. FP will then do it all for you. If the site is very large, it may take a few minutes.

Four ways to choose from, select the text you wish to have for the link on the page, then

  • click on the "Insert Hyperlink" button on the toolbar,
  • or go menu bar >> Insert >> Hyperlink
  • or use Control +K
  • or right mouse click >> Hyperlink

Once in the link window, simply choose the file you want to link to, or paste the full external URL in the field and click ok. Ensure that any files you wish to link to are contained within your web and will be published.

Really appriciate the help.

So, I have a folder with a globe in it named HIBTECH. Everything within that folder is my web. Every time i create a new web page within HIBTECH i want to link to, FP automatically creates a norrmal folder with all the infomation held within that page. Is this OK?

So i can have normal folders within the main folder "HIBTECH with a globe in it"?

I just need the one main folder with a globe in it?

I'm sorry - I don't understand? You don't need to place new pages in their own folder, it is usual to have the majority in the root folder.

Images are best kept in the "images" folder.

Can you explain what process you are using to create a new page?

I have the main index file as my home page. I then cut the bits out i dont want for my next new page, leaving me with a kind of a template. I then save this now new file CASE STUDIES in HIBTECH of which FP automatically creates a normal folder on its own - still in HIBTECH. I write and modify what i need in CASE STUDIES and save it - still within HIBTECH. I then go back to the makeshift template and now save this as a new file TIPS and save it within HIBTECH. Make some changes, add text, then save.

I do this until i have 4 or 5 links down the left side of screen. each link relates to a web page (with it's own normal folder) all inside the main HIBTECH web site folder with a globe in it.

hope this makes sense.

All folders within a Web, should be "normal" folders (no globe).

A suggestion: create a new page and call it "template.htm" and save it. Then paste in all your unchanging material and use it as a permanent template. Might save you a bit of time rather than having recreate one every time. You can right click on the file in folder view and mark it "don't publish" if you want to just keep it locally.

I am quite flummoxed as to why or what process is leading to FP creating a folder around each new page you are creating. I've never seen such a thing.

However, rather than obsessing about it, once you have finished creating all your pages, I suggest you go to folder view and drag and drop each page from its folder to the root web. When you do this FP will (should!) automatically update any links that are affected. Make sure you have no other pages open in html view when you do this, or FP cannot update that page's links.

When you have lots of empty folders, delete them.

Hope this helps a bit.

So what is the question?

- If this is your question, what is a globe?

The globe folder icon that FP uses when it creates a FP web.

if you look back to the begining of the post, my problem is that my links that i upload are being diverted back to by hard drive (the original source) not the ones ive just uploaded.

the globe is the little icon in the middle of of the folder in WIN. I didnt have that before, i do now. But still the links dont work.

everything works ok when i simulate them off line in FP.

???

If you could give us the URL to look at it might assist a little.

Basically what seems to be happenning is that the path for the files/images/links are all linking to the actual location of the file on the hard drive.

I think a link would help, but what I would do is this:
1) Navigate to your FP Web.
2) Copy the FP Web, and paste it in another location. (Right-click the folder > copy, then right-click in another location > paste)
3) Then open FP, then open the web you just copied/pasted.
4) Recalculate hyperlinks, save, close, restart your OS.
5) Upload your site again using File > Publish

There is another thing I would try too.
1) Repeat steps 1-3 in the first suggestion.
2) Open FP. Goto File > New Page/Web
3) Create a New empty web.
4) Exit out of FP. Open up windows explorer (rightclick start menu and click explore). Navigate to your old web, and copy the contents of your old web (the one we are having issues with) and paste them inside the folder of the new web.
5) Open FP, open the web you created.
6) File > Publish

Kitka might have an easier suggestion once you post the URL, but this is what I would try.

Thanks for the help again.

hibtech.com

will try all suggestions. Incidently im not going to file>publish through FP. My host doesnt support FP extentions. im using IPSWITCH to upload the web. It works great (i think) but all links are refering to my hard drive.

Ohmeegosh and eeks! :)

I just looked at your source code and it is awash with miles of Microsoft Word formatting!

I'd say that is the primary problem.

If you need to paste text from Word, you should always paste it into Notepad first, then copy and paste again into Frontpage from Notepad. Or, at the very least, use Paste Special > Normal Paragraphs.
