Photoshop 7:Path: curved, straight, curved, straight - 1/10/2005 7:02:11
Problem summary: I want to draw a path around a shape that is curved, straight, curved, straight (it's like the collar end of a telescope). I can get the 1st curve and the 1st straight, but get stuck when I go to do the 2nd curve and the 2nd straight. Problem background: I've used the pen tool, and dragged to get curves, & used the point conversion tool to change the anchor point to make the 1st straight line. My understanding of how to change anchor points to get curves and straights is fuzzy! Many thanks for considering my problem. spinningjennie

you might find it easier to use the shift key whilst drawing to contsrain curves to 90 degree arcs or perfectly sytaight lines (180 degrees). you could also use and modify the shapes - the presets like the rounder rectangle etc...

Thanks for your tips Dave which were very useful for beginner me! In case this helps others, I did work out how to use the pen tool to create a path that is curved, straight, curved, straight like the collar of a telescope. My error in the past was to think I had to drag at both ends of my curve, plus not knowing how to delete a direction point so I could create the next 'straight'. Steps: 1. Select Pen tool. 2. For 1st curve, click once to create the 1st anchor point, then click at end of (soon-to-be) curve, while dragging in the direction of your desired curve to create the 2nd anchor point. This results in 2 direction points at either side of the 2nd anchor point. 3. To be ready for the 1st straight, you need to delete the 2nd direction point. Do it by holding Alt key & clicking on that anchor point. Then click at the end of the 1st straight to make the 3rd anchor point. 4. For 2nd curve, click once to create the 4th anchor point, while dragging in direction of required curve. This results in 2 direction points at either side of the 4th anchor point. 5. To be ready for the 2nd straight, you need to delete the 2nd direction point, by holding Alt key & clicking on that anchor point. Then click on the (beginning) 1st anchor point again to make the 2nd straight & join up with the beginning. Done!
