Can cascading style sheets be used to create columns in a template where you might otherwise use tables?

I'm planning a major facelift and wonder if now is the time to master CSS.

You can create your tables with CSS but columns are a different thing - it is a great leap for those who are accustomed to working with print media to accept that the way HTML pages are laid out is just different, you can emulate the layout but not create it in the same way.

In other words, no columns as we understand them from print media, certainly no autoflow. Pity.
