Visual C++ Runtime Error in Frontpage 2000 - 1/12/2005 9:52:32
I' ve tried to edit a CSS file in Frontpage 2000 and been unable to save changes. I get an error message as follows : --- Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C\Program\Microsoft Office\Office\FRONTPG.EXE This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. --- I recently installed Windows XP SP2 (brand new installation, not an upgrade) and this is the first time I've gone to edit a style sheet. Everything was fine in Windows 98SE. Can anyone tell me what causes this and help me to resolve this issue, please? Many thanks. Annie

That message is much too general to be of use in diagnosing the problem. Do you have rights to all of the files you're trying to save? Did your PC display a message that it was trying to contact MS?

I installed Windows XP SP2 as a clean install - formatted the hard disk and loaded Windows and all programs from scratch. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FP but this made no difference. Dankos, I have administrator rights on my PC if that's what you mean. I had a message which gave me the opportunity to send an error report to Microsoft, which I did and then downloaded the Office Update - none of which has helped. I've even tried running FP in Windows 98 configuration but this didn't even let me open the program without an error. I am able to save over the top of a previously-made css file but if I try to alter the file in any way and then go to save, this is when I get the error. After doing a bit of a search on here I see that others have also had this problem but no-one seems to have come up with a solution. They are suggesting using notepad or another editor. It's just so annoying that it used to work in Windows 98 and now doesn't in XP. Using notepad has proved a problem because it keeps wanting to give the filename another name each time I save, ie. style.ccs, then style1.css, style2.css, etc. although these files don't appear in the folder - very weird.

Try installing the MS Office 2000 SP3 or greater. (Whether you have Office or not.)

I've already installed it when I did the Office Update. Still no luck with the problem though.

I'm afraid I never did. I set Frontpage to open css files in Notepad in the Options > Configure Editors settings. When I save over the top, rather than pressing Save, I press Save As and browse to the file on the hard drive. Once you've done this the first time you can keep the Notepad window open while you're working on it and just press Save each time you make a modification. Of course, if you close it down you need to use Save As again. It's more long-winded but I've got used to it.

Go to start>control panel> administrative tools>services and be sure the windows installer service is enabled. If this is disabled, Frontpage will sometimes give this error. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C\Program\Microsoft Office\Office\FRONTPG.EXE This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Another cause of frontpage errors during launch is the cmdui.prf file being corrupted. It stores your custom settings for the toolbars. If the previous idea didn't work try searching your computer for this file and deleting it(frontpage will create a new one when you launch it). if you don't return this file during a search be sure you are set to show hidden and system files. if you have FP installed, you will have this file on your system somewhere.
