what's the best software for PRINT & web? - 1/12/2005 15:28:50
I am getting more and more requests for a whole solution -- I will do the logo, website, etc. and they want brochures, sales sheets and more. What would be the best and least expensive (hopefully they will be the same) software for this?? It has to be major printer shop compatible.

Hi Summer

As far as I know, for the best quality possible, there is not a program that exists that could do it. You will either get one great, and the other awful, or both awful.

For my Web Work I use a mix of Photoshop (for graphics) and Dreamweaver (for coding)

For any print work, either Macromedia Freehand, or Adobe Illustrator.

The way to get best quality is to have two porgrams, one designed for each task.

I know this isn't the answer you want to see, but, I think it's the best answer you'll get.

Dan

Coreldraw is a great option for producing logo's etc. You can assemble your drawings graphics lettering etc then output in a variety of formats for web or print media.

You can also use it for print layout, outputting to high res pdf files which most printers (in UK anyway) will work from.

If you buy the Corel suite you also get corel photopaint which IMHO is superior and faster to use than PS.

You can pick up older versions quite cheaply now, and they'll still do everything you want. I'm still using version 8.

I have all the MS Applications and was using MS PhotoDraw for logos, etc.

I have the Corel WP Suite and PSP. I love using Publishers because I have been using computers since I was 5 (I am 26), starting out with PASCAL and LOGO and the like. I really am not comfortable with AI, but everyone seems to accept them.

My problem right now is that when I save something as a PDF using the PDF995 printer driver, it has white space around the graphics (png files). See http://www.protect-a-bubusa.com/inserts/snuggle_bub_8.pdf

My husband is a student at an online college, so I wonder if I can get the student discount for him and pick up some nice copies of good software. I can't afford to buy the software, but I can't afford not to, you know?

"Best" is a pretty open ended term...

As far as graphic design goes (print/web graphics) Photoshop is the big winner, hands down. I don't think there's a graphic designer anywhere that would dispute that...

For brochures I would recommend Quark Express (though I'm not sure it comes in a PC version..?) or Publisher.

As far as a single, all-in-one solution I don't think there is one... though Macromedia makes products that integrate with each other pretty well... you're probably looking at something like a Creative Suite from Adobe...

:)

quark xpress is available for pc but it's around £1000! adobe indesign is getting very popular and is around half the price. I don't think publisher would be a good choice unles you can find a printer who will take it.

corel is good but not so many printers have it - though most/all would take pdfs. illustrator/freehand would be the way to go, with photoshop for the graphics.

ask around a few printers thay you might use and see what they can accept.

whatever it is it's prablably going to be expensive, but then print design is ;)

that opens the door to some amazing pricing for "educational" versions which are 100% complete...proviso that they are not "supposed" to be used for commercial use (<blush>) Macro MX 2004 suite that retails for $995 is $179

Also keep in mind that these days a printer should be able to accept almost any digital format... from .doc to .eps to .psd

they'll have their preferences, but they'll all be a little bit different.

Publisher does all sorts of CMYK things... and it compacts to send to a commercial printer and all that... I just can't find any more printers that will use it, especially in China!

I got a copy of AI 10 for $25 (full version)... I have PSP... anything else that would top it off but still be affordable?

I got a few student priced versions of software... the discounts made me sick -- Windows XP OS for $8.00 !! But I can't find any good graphics programs.

The "BEST" products are made by Adobe - that is why most graphic artists and print houses swear by them.

Photoshop for graphic design.
Illustrator for print design.

Coreldraw is very easy to use, extremely versatile, and it will export as hi res pdf files which are acceptable to just about every printer I've ever dealt with.

Personally, Adobe Creative Suite. Includes everything you need for graphics...web, print, etc. It is not inexpensive, but then none of the "all-inclusive" packages are. There are many excellent programs out there. Find one that fits your price range, then spend a bit more, and invest heavily in time to master it.

You will be greatly rewarded through time investment.

Good luck,
Bonnie

Have to agree with everybody here. No one product will do all you want at the capabilities you want. Adobe is the most popular not because of it's price or easy learning curve, but because it generally can do the most.

That said you should be able to get a very good deal using your husband's education discount. For years I took one class a semester after graduating just for the discount on software.

If you get really lucky may find somebody willing to sell old versions as new ones come out.
