Web site hosting question - 1/13/2005 10:25:14
Hello everyone,

I'm looking into setting a small website for nothing other than informational purposes and was wondering what some suggestions would be for the best way to accomplish what I want. I know there are many different companies that will host a site for me, but I don't want to use templates to create the site. I want to build the whole site myself, using FrontPage, instead of using the templates that hosting services usually make you use. Anyone know of a way to run my site without having to use hosting templates?

Thanks
Erin

Erin -

when you get a host they shouldn't care what you use to build your site... they just "rent" you space on the server and you can do whatever you want there (within the grasp of the terms and policies of the host)

The host should give you a list of features, a login name and a password for your account... after that they're out of it unless you need help.

Any host who requires you to use a template should be discarded immediately...

I've heard good things about Thomas (Outfront) but I haven't used his services personally.

I have used (and currently do use) www.parcom.net and www.phoenixws.net and both companies are excellent hosts.

(Neither of them care if I use a template or not... :))

There are a few hosts out there who offer "Business Packages" and make you use their site-builder software.

One of my clients turned up with a host like that. The sitebuilder was limited to around 6 templates with about a dozen different pictures you could plug in. It was useless. I couldn't find anything that even resembled his business.

I tried to upload using ftp but it was blocked and when I mailed them to ask for ftp release I was told my client would have to upgrade to the next level.

He was already paying £99 ($190) p.a. for the service so I told him to cut his losses and signed him up with my cheapy host.

For £15 p.a. ($25) he now has a tailored web site and I can ftp to my heart's delight. :)
