Diagonal split in page - 1/15/2005 12:37:07
Is there a way to create a diagonal line, going from the lower corner of the page to the opposite upper corner of the page?

Basically, I'd like a diagonal column break. The page could have a header and footer, but the body would be split by a diagonal (rather than vertical) column. Text would still need to scroll appropriately with the diagonal margin, as the page is resized.

Can this be done?

Andrew

Assuming the astericks are the breaks...

* * * * * * * * * * * * *
Header Area
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
*
 * And this "column"
  * has a diagonal
   * left margin
    * that will
     * scroll around
The    * as the page
text    * height and
here can * width change.
scroll    *
around and *
align with  *
the diagonal *
margin as the *
page width     *
changes.        *
                *
                 *
                  *
                   *
                    *
                     *
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
Footer Stuff Here
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hi Serenity,
Great to see you about!

In answer to your question, I'm not sure if this can be done or not. Might wait to see what someone with a bit more experience in all of this has to say.

I would say, no, but I'm not sure. Have you tried a google search? Might be something that you would have to do as a graphic?

Yeah, glad to be back around - even if it is only for a quick question.   What free time I have I'm spending with my wife and not sitting in front of a PC.   I haven't even peeked at the lounge in weeks and weeks.   I'm glad someone even remembers me.   But this weekend I'm in a hotel room in Cleveland, because my work visit here has been extended, so I thought I'd help out a friend on some web stuff.

This is the first (and so far only) place that I've looked for an answer recently.   I did some time ago and never found anything, but what can be done on the web changes quickly, so I thought I'd ask.

I'd be open to doing it with graphics, as a second choice, but I don't see how text wrapping could be accommodated with a graphic solution.

You may be on a hiding to nothing, but check out Eric Meyer's slantastic pages at
http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/slantastic/demo.html

As he points out, you need CSS-2 supporting browsers, which lets out - ssshhh....you know who:)

Good fun though.
Welcome back,
Carol

Every now and then the company talks about moving us up here or to Chicago. Jean and I start thinking that would be okay - something fresh, something different, and all that.   Then I come up here and scrape snow off my windows, slide around on the streets, and remember why we moved South.

We love the people from this part of the country, but the despite all the talk of "wait 15 minutes and the weather will change", I can truthfullly testify "the weather has not changed"!

Got to get moving now,

the text wrapping could be achieved with a technique that was coined as "sandbagging" and I have a feeling that what you describe in your ASCII could be done though it would be "experimental", very div heavy ;) and I wouldn't like to attest to the browser support.

as you see in the link It's fairly easy to do it one way.. (1 x lot of diagonal text) though it involves a lot of empty elements (divs)..

to achieve a two way effect would involve either positioning or floating a second container div over the top of the first one, which is the bit I think could be visually possible.. then any accessing links, text selection in the "bottom" layer would require some z-index work too, and the whole effect would need to be controlled very tightly height wise as text enlargement would make it break.. would need some experimenting,

There is a proposed <l> or <line> element which would simplify this whole thing but that could take a while ;)

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll need to spend and evening and prowl through all this. But I got my start, which is what I needed.

Thanks again,
Andrew
