I recently suffered a HDD failure. The drive burned up and no data was salvageable. I had backups of most everything, except my most recent incarnation of a FP03 web. BUT it is up live on the server. I literally had just put it up when the drive crashed and i did have time to back it up.
How do i go about retrieving it? This may be a simple process, but i have never done it and thought i would ask if there is a simple way before i go fiddling around trying to figure it out myself.

I did a search, numerous in fact, on reverse publishing. Lots of discussions, but no instructions. I see reference to a june 8th newsletter, but i cannot find it for the life of me.
If anyone can point me in the direction of the "how to" i would be most appreciative. I really have looked, i cant find it !

Step by Step Instructions for “Publishing Down” a Website:


(1) In FrontPage, open your server files by clicking File >>Open, (2) Browse to “My Network Places” (3) In the File Name field type the web site address, for example: " http://www.yourwebsite.com", (3) Enter your username & password when prompted, (4) Once the server files open in FrontPage click File >> Publish Site and, (5) For the address to publish, enter a destination on your hard drive, for example: C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite. (Note: if the location doesn’t exist on your hard drive, you will be prompted to “Create? Yes or No”. Answer Yes.)

Last item: Republish to Host Overwriting all Files - Site will then be “In Step”

Thanks for the reply Larry...
I am stuck...I navigated using "open" and the page came up in FP, but when i tried to "publish file", that option is Greyed out ,it wont allow me to do that. I was never promoted for a password using this method.
So, i navigated using "open web", but was told the page could not be accessed without a password, but it never gave me the option of entering one.

Any thoughts on what i can do?

See what you mean. After the Open command, click the "Up One Level" icon until you get to the Desktop, then select "My Network Places" and follow the rest of the steps I passed on. Done this many times with no problems.

Well, think i got it done, BUT the way i got it was using the "import web" button, saved it to a local folder, then opened it with FP.
I tried that because even after following your last step i could not get the "publish web" as an active button.
I am using FP 2003 if that makes a difference. NONE the less, thank you for your assistance !

I appreciate your attention to this. I really am not a dunce, but...
In order to prevent any further confusion on my part...
Could you list the complete set of steps...
I have no idea how to get to...

BTW,
Not that i don't believe you, just curious...why wont what i did work?
I just created a folder in my docs/my webs/ and imported the page to that folder.
When i look at the folder with Windows explorer, all seems to be present that should be( but perhaps i am missing some hidden files?).
Regardless. I cam open fP/open web/ navigate to that folder and the page opens for editing.

The "hidden" files and the accompanying "web update" is what is missing in a simple "import". Unfortunately, they are both crucial.

BNDAZ,

FrontPage 2003 makes it easy to do this. With your site open in FrontPage >>File >>Publish Site. Once connected to the server you will see the server files displayed on the right as well as your site files on the left. On the lower right hand side you will see under "Publish All (Changed) Pages" "Local to Remote", which is the default setting, "Remote to Local", which is the one you want to select and "Synchronize" which you shouldn't bother with in this situation.

When the "Local to Remote" option is exercised, the host will publish down all files to your site overwriting all files. When this is done select >>Insert >> Recalculate Hyperlinks then republish up to the server again overwriting all files. After the dust settles both sets of files will be in step.

And, yes, I've done this many times and, yes, it works just fine. Primarily I use this, or a version of it with Synchronization when one of my sites has been updated by another designer and I need to get the files in step.
