Pretty amazing CSS driven site - 1/17/2005 21:31:33

Resize the browser down to less than 800x600 and then resize it to 1024x768 or higher, and you will see what I mean :)

I've been playing with something that gives a similar outcome on a client site but nowhere near that sophisticated. I'm using pure css whereas they've got a js checker in there. I'm trying to make the site js free.

How was the site created with the scroll bar on the outside and scrolling text on the inside?

- Sounds impossible to do without js. Have anything for us to look at? It would be interesting to see how far we could get without using js.

Like I said it's not as flash as theirs and I am still playing around with box sizes to get everything to fit right but here's a link.

http://www.jbvisions.co.uk/clients/heliwise/contact.htm

800x600 and 1024x768 check it out. Let me know if it goes totally barmy.

And yes there is a js in there before someone points it out.

It's the script for the newsletter subscription and it'll be replaced with php as soon as I have 5 minutes.

New to web design arena and don't know the technical side of things but that is an impressive site. Oh dear. It is way beyond me and makes me even more anxious about the length of the road ahead. Ah well.

Everything is way beyond you now. Just keep plugging away and in no time you'll be churning out stuff you never thought possible. It just takes practice, a willingness to learn, a willingness to try new things and a regular trip to Outfront. :)

Thanks for those words Jaybee. It's really encouraging knowing that there are people like you around to help a fifty odd year old novice who has finished one career and started another. This forum is a great read even if I don't understand that much of it.

You are by no means unique - there are many sitting in exactly the same boat, even if you can't currently see each other.

Take heart - a willingness to read, listen and learn from all the various posts in OutFront, is absolutely invaluable! We have had 60, 70 and 80 year olds learn from reading and posting here.

Well now. Thanks Kitka for those comments. I feel young again.

Jaybee. Someone admitting that they are heading towards 50. I can't believe it. You have kept a lovely figure and that gold cloak suits you. A previous career is I think helpful as you probably have a better understanding of clients needs rather that fancy site which do not hit their customers.

And for you Dave I am ashamed that you have given away Jaybee's age so flippantly. Especially for a man of your high office. Again, you look so young and innocent. It must be down to living in those high latitudes.

It is good that you all seem so intent on being in my age group (called going silver, I think). I do now feel much more at home.

Well back to my studying and of course watching the forum. Thank you all and look forward to chatting again soon.

What's really impressive about this site is that it recognizes when you have a sidebar open, like favorites. So many sites that resize fail to do that and push content beyond the right edge of the browser.

Cheers Dan.

Feel real good now. Amongst friends who know how I feel.

Got my second web design request today. Oh God!!!!

Sorry shouldn't say those things.

Think I'm a bit too good at the selling and falling behind with the studying.

Ian, then maybe you should go with your strength?

I started out 5 years ago, learned html, asp, and eventually css and more. Finally, I realised this was taking too much time away from the source of income. It is so difficult when you are starting out to balance getting the sales vs getting the work done.

There are many, many young people out there that can create websites. There are far fewer who can understand what a business needs and turn that into a project for that young person. Last August, I threw up my hands, closed my eyes, and hired a young student who does this stuff in his sleep (or at night anyway).

Now I have the time to sell -- and to learn more.

Hi Davids

You could be right. It is early days so I will not judge the matter just yet. I will however remember your comments and if it comes down to it I will just sell. Is there a market out there for sales professionals to pass their projects to designers for a fee. Maybe a new outfront thread here.

RE: Pretty amazing CSS driven site - 1/19/2005 19:05:19
No, Ian, I don't know of any market for that. Anyway, at this point, I don't think a market would work for you - or for me. It is a big job to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements. When starting out, you need close communication between the client, yourself, and the developer.

I could find developers in India/China very cheap, but the problem of communications really requires someone you can sit down with and think things through, like you do with your clients. I meet with my developer every week or so, and stay in touch with MSN.

Sure, Ian. I know that for a lot of people here, this is their passion, or at least a hobby that they want to make a business of, and they are perhaps at a stage in their life when they can do that. That's great for them <envious smiley>.

On the other hand I have three children and a mortgage, so I'm probably one of the pragmatic voices. That's why you usually don't find me chatting here much.

Anyway this site has been invaluable for me. The people are warm and helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks Davids

Appreciate your time and comments. Hope to speak to you again soon.

Don't smile too enviously. I have three children as well. All of them went through Uni. Last one half way through course. Nice and expensive.

Take care and thanks

It begins to break down if you increase the text size in FF, but only with a small overlap at the bottom; but with IE- aaeeyy, the text sizing has no effect, you can't adjust it in the browser. The prolog - <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> is there with the doctype, so effectively throwing IE into Quirks mode.

Nice to see a site not designed with IE in mind :) - or even deliberately using Quirks mode:)
