big John -> My website in other browsers! (3/30/2001 15:30:00)

I have a problem I am sure you all can help me with, I put lunch menus on my site and I put the data inside tables, ex.
Hamburger . . . . . . . . $1.50
the word hamburger and the dots are in one column and the price in another, however when I see the menu in other browsers sometimes the word Hamburger will be on one line with let's say three dots, then the rest of the dots on a second line then the price will display (of course still in it's own column) thus increasing the height of the table. Is there any way to set the table properties so that in every browser the the table adjusts itself and the menu looks good or should I recomend a particular resolution on the first page of my website so people know what resolution setting to use so everything looks good?
I hope you all can help!!

Well don;t recommend a resolution anyway - everyone will ignore it. Have you ever changed your resolution to look at a page????

Anyway resolution is not the whole story - if for example I make my window small then even with a high resolution I may have a skewed view of things.

The dots will go to a lower line because there is not room for them any longer in the width of the cell. You could try fixing the cell width - thoough this may just open up another can of worms and produce a sideways scroll.

I think you should reconsider how you display your menu. On way would be using a third column between the column containing the menu items and the one with the prices. Set the width of the cells in this column and put a transparent gif of the same width, say about 30-40 pixels wide, into an empty cell in this column. This will prevent it from collapsing.

Then right align your menu item cells and left align the prices and you should have a pretty neat layout. Using the dots, as you may have been, to vary the space between the menu items and their prices will be problematic. COmpromise is they key.

Good answer.

Just thought I'd mention that text size is also a factor you need to allow for. Everyone can change their browser settings for larger or smaller text sizes, depending on what they prefer. Most leave it at the default it loads with, but it's quite handy... especially for those with poor vision.

You can set your table width at 595 pixels so the entire table will show at all resolutions.

Keep in mind that Netscape displays form fields wider than IE.

Keep testing in Netscape at that table width, making adjustments as necessary, then it will look fine in IE.
