After years of patience... it is finally here - 1/18/2005 10:46:42
I finally got my new machine...

P4 3.0 GHz (800 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2)
Asus P4P800S-X mobo
1 GB PC3200 DDR RAM (2 x 512 MB)
ATI Radeon 9600XT All-in-Wonder (w/ remote)
80 GB, 7200 rpm, 8MB HDD
120 GB, 7200 rpm, 8MB HDD
7-in-1 media reader
3.5" floppy
Samsung DVD +/- RW

Dual boot XP and Mepis Linux, of course... :)

I have to say that I'm pretty sure this machine makes me more productive... faster boot times, runs everything faster than the old P-III

But the fact that this one plays games and such tends to even it all out...

:)

And here's me whos just upgraded MoBo & processor, b'coz my Socket 370 went up in smoke...lol

P4 2.4 Ghz (automatically overclocking at 3.6Ghz:) - no intervention needed)
256MB RAM
Asus Mobo, same model as Bobby
ATI Radeon 7000

Ok, so I'm on a seriously tight budget....

Sorry to drift ever so slightly away from the topic, but overclocking.

Pros & cons of it?

overclocking:

Pro: speed, baby!

Con: that blue smoke coming from your processor...

:)

Dan, that must be the "C" model 2.4 GHz processor from Intel... I've seen that sucker clocked to a bus speed of 1.2GHz :)

I've been putting this off for at least two years... pretty much the same system I've wanted the whole time... just paid a little less than I would have two years ago, LOL

I'm still reinstalling software... the MS File and Setting Transfer Wizard is a pathetic joke.

Unfortunately UT2K4 is taking up more of my time these days... so it's taking me longer to get everything set up that I need to...

3DMark-03 gave me a 3874 score with no tweaks or anything... I'm hoping a few trips to blackviper.com will bump me over the 4K mark...

:)

It's a whole new world of geekdom for me... I now have a PC with > 1GHz processor and 3D acceleration!!!!!!!

:)

I'm using the Prescott Model, 2.4 Ghz on the box @ 133Mhz...but it's a dual spead, you can have 133Mhz or 200Mhz :)

The BIOS was automatically set to 3.6Ghz (200Mhz) So I'm not gonna argue! My RAMS running at a speed of 400Mhz...

Even the OEM info can't make it's mind up...lol..it says both 2.4 and 3.6, but according to SiSoft, I'm running at 3.4Ghz....soo...you do the math :)

I'm running XP Pro without any of my tweaks, or those from Mr BV yet...maha

Oh yeah...the Radeon 7000 series, mah not be up to much in the reviews, but this one I've got plugged in here is superb, it's only a 32MB one,. but my lord...lol...NFSU2....I think i'm gonna play that some more....:):)

This is a big jump for me too...coming from a 633Mhz....heh

I have a 2Ghz Celeron machine sat next to me on the floor...that's for a friend though...

Sounds similar to me Bobby. I battled on with a 450mhz P3 till a couple of months ago when I built me a brand new box. :)

I'm really pleased with it, it flies in comparison to my old clunker. Although it is noticeably louder, despite having bought a special "quiet" case - Antec Sonata. I think I am going to have to find a way of putting it under my desk rather than on, as it is now.

P4E 3.0 GHz Prescott
Asus P4P800-E Deluxe mobo
1 GB Kingston PC3200 (200mhz) DDR SDRAM (2 x 512 MB)
Seagate 80 GB, 7200 rpm HDD
Pioneer DVR-108 DVD +/- RW

I'm not a game player, so was content to transfer over my old GeForce4 MX440 video card from the old computer to save a few pennies.

Kitka, you can buy sound dampning kits if it is that loud. May be worth thinking about.

What kind of loud is it?

Does it sound like the fan or hard drive?

It could be that something isn't completely tight... loose screw on a fan housing could make a lot of racket...

Yes I know - like the AcoustiPack pre-cut especially for the Sonata - it is almost as expensive as the case (incl PSU) was: ~US$80 which is ~ AU$106.

I've read some articles, and opinion is divided as to whether it is worth the trouble and expense.

Just like loud fan noises, a bit louder than my old PC.

Fans mainly - I can only hear the HDD if I put my ear really close. I've read other people complaining about the fan which comes with the Prescott cpu though. In fact, I looked for an after-market silent one, before I even started building the computer. But the mobo makes things difficult cos there is very little room around the cpu and most silent models, like Zalman, are far too big.

Highly unlikely. I think there are only 4 screws in the whole computer (besides the mobo ones, which are tight). The 4 are mounted in rubber grommets that hold the HDD to the removable tray. And the 120mm rear fan is held in place by silicon rubber isolation mounts.

Part of the problem I think is the ANTEC logo which is punched into both sides of the case as holes. So that allows the sound to escape, plus it provides an avenue for a lot of dust to get into the case which doesn't impress me. The washable filter in front keeps most dust out from the normal airflow, so it seems odd to have provided extra entry points. If acoustic insulation is added, that naturally covers those holes, so maybe it is a good idea. Although I have seen those holes referred to as extra ventilation and I wouldn't like to reduce that.

The Celeron 2Ghz I have sat next to me - when it's on, it's silent
My P4 2.4/3.6Ghz - Can hear the fans, but that's only b'cos there's 7 in it:)
The empty Mercedes Case sat on the other side of me is pretty damn quiet when it's up and running.

Paid about £30 each for the above cases, so not expensive ones either, two of them are Gaming cases with neon lights, and the others a MIDI Case, designed to look somewhat like a BMW:)

That's probably the culprit.. if you're sure it's the processor fan and not the one on the power supply or one in the case...

You should be able to replace it for under $30 with a quieter one... though size will be an issue.

You might opt to put a quiet fan in the top of the case, blowing down across your processor, and replace the fan with a heat sink... though I'd speak with an expert before doing this, to make sure it will be enough...

P4's run pretty hot...
