How do I mirror a FrontPage site? - 1/18/2005 15:22:42
I have a RedHat server with all the goodies, and FP extensions... and I want to mirror a FrontPage website with the extensions... is there some utility that translates the extensions?

Thanks in advance.

Relon

It's as simple as publish it to either (a) a sub web or (b) publish it to another server.

To mirror any web, all it needs is to be put somewhere else in the exact state.

In this case my client has a website that is largish (3gigs) and the client has a dialup connection that is like 28k at best. The site has been built over a number of years... and to upload the site to another server is very difficult because of speed constraints. Maybe the client can just upload the files that use the extensions, and the rest I can ftp?

Sure would be nice if there was a way to "hot copy" a whole FP site.

A 3GB, that is a huge site. But to mirror the site you will need a copy of it as it is on the server currently. And the you have two options for that:

1) Ask the host to back it up, and send it to you via mail on CD/DVD
2) Publish down to your HDD/FTP the files

But,

Will work just fine:)

If you have FrontPage Server Extensions and pages reliant on them, that would be fraught with danger. Using ftp is well known for corrupting FPSE. Publishing from FP is the only safe method.

- Exact same state, meaning, the exact same username and exact same path. Else it will not work.

I use cPanel on my servers, I can simply create a FULL backup of one site, then upload it later on, replacing all the other files, and it will function just as if I never did anything.

The best way to do this is server side. FTP can cause issues, but it might work. (I can't see why it would not work if the published files are being transfered).

Ask the client's current host if they can create a backup. Then download the backup, then ftp the backup to the new site, then unzip the backup into the root dir of the new site.

It all depends how good your host/his host is. If they suck, you could possibly be spending a LOT of time doing this. If you have a very good host, it could take all of about 2 minutes of work, rest would be waiting for downloads/uploads.

OK, just to make sure here... the root path needs to be the same (hopefully not) or the web path needs to be the same?

On this site I have this for the server path:

/home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/all_the_FP_stuff

and this for the web path:

/all_the_FP_stuff

I presume you mean the last one when you say "exact same path."

I should be able to make this work... maybe even with rsync.

I'll post my findings here once I get a solution.

/home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/all_the_FP_stuff

needs to be the same. This is because FP stores your username/domain (which is whatever the path is) inside of its configuration files.
