J-man -> sub domain (1/18/2005 16:14:48)

will having sub domains that point to page of the main domain help with search engine placement?

Mojo -> RE: sub domain (1/19/2005 0:40:54)

It can as it is looked at as a seperate domain, but it would be very easy to trip a filter or run into a future filter and receive a penalty.

I wouldn't do it.

Eek! We run a community web site and host several local clubs and associations as sub-domains. Do you mean that by having them linking back to the main site we are being penalised by the search engines?? [:o]

Heck - we are already being penalised because we host a large number of local businesses on one IP address as resellers. Our community population is only ~3500, so it isn't surprising that local businesses choose us to host. [>:]

No, just that subdomains are commonly used by SEOs to game search engines. It *can* look like your spamming the SE (which we all do). I don't know what J-man is trying to do - maybe he sells shirts on domain.com, themometers on thermo.domain.com, a blog on the aluminum industry at AL.domain.com and then links them all using shirts as the anchor text to domain.com. This can boost your SERPs for domain.com in the shirt industry, but it is so very easy to tell that all those sites belong to the same person.

If by using subdomains, you come up with a way that it might be viewed as spam, you could [stress could] receive a penalty. Unless you have a good reason to use subdomains you may as well use directories.

But, the short answer for J-man is YES - you can use subdomains to increase your SERPs. For now.

kinda like that mojo but something more like carModel.cars.com toyota.cars.com, honda.cars.com, ford.cars.com

and each would link to a unique respective page with in cars.com. I'm actually wondering if i created these sub domains rather than have pages like cars.com/honda am i any better off? does it really make a difference? in my situation i may have over 400 models of cars, there over 400 subdomains, can all sub domains really get listed, how would you suggest i go about this? thanks

It is easier for clubs to put this on their stationery: http://football.placename.com than http://www.placename.com/football/.

And because it is shorter, people remember it better.
