I think that this may get quite a bit of discussion but I need to know. I have FrontPage and Dreamweaver. I have used FrontPage so far. So I don't want to enter that debate.(Read some past discussion).

What I really want to know is what other software do people think I need and to learn. Remember I am a beginner and not into code at present so no deep tough stuff. Already have Firework,Flash and Freehand so far untouched.

pick from DW or FP - whichever you are most comfortable with.....leave Flash and Freehand alone for now... learn Fireworks for web graphics.

do yourself a favor..as you build a page in either DW or FP, take the time to occasionally look at "code view" and gain some familiarity with html - its the foundation of the web and, in fact, quite simple - you will thank yourself down the road. good luck and welcome to Outfront

For starters, a good graphic editing program such as PaintShopPro ( www.jasc.com ) or PhotoShop . Also consider a great multi-purpose add-in (banner ads, headings, drop-down menus, logo, etc.) Webstyle4 ( www.xara.com ). With FrontPage, a Flash program and the above, you've got the basics covered.

Other OutFronters will undoubtedly want to contribute further.

I started with psp and so it is still my favorite - I agree with Larry- I really only siad Fireworks because he already has it.

I have to agree with the above posters. You need a good graphics program.
As for other programs, it all depends on what you are going to do.
I use CRELoaded for my sites that need an advanced shopping system. (Sundance Crystals and Power Wagons)
I started learning search engine placement using Web Position and I think it has worked well for me.
Plug in filters for PhotoShop, Cute FTP, Flash, DreamWeaver, Net Objects Fusion, multiple various CGI and java scripts, Adobe Suite for making PDF files and Adobe's GoLive for editing CSS, Microsoft Office for Excel, (CGI and MySQL Databases), Outlook to handle mail, and of course notepad.

When it comes to Building the pages, I tend to use a mix of Fireworks, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and TopStyle. Yes, it may seem overkill for the job, but it's my style of doing things.

The best advice has already been given:

And as Mr D has said, leave FLASH and Freehand alone for now. FLASH is self explanatory, and Freehand is for Print work (leaflets, flyers, brochures etc)

Fireworks is a good program, and works fine with both FP and DW (speaking from experience), Fireworks has a lot of built in features that PSP and PS don't have. Photoshop is by far the best for still images, Paint Shop Pro is on par with Photoshop, just a hell of a lot cheaper, and Fireworks is great for GIFs, Animated GIFs, it's vector based program, and allows for hotspot animation, you can create Nav Bars with it....

Use what you have, and what you find easiest

Thank you everyone for your comments. I will stick with FP and upgrade to the 2003 version. I will take on Fireworks and purchase PSP to start with. I am much clearer on the way ahead now. Getting confused with all these different software packages.

I have bought a book on HTML and will read that as well as looking at the code when I am designing my next site.

Dan. I have seen some Baseball. A bit slow but okay. It's a bit like Rounders which mainly ladies play here I think. Mind you, in the UK we have Cricket and that is even worse and can last 5 days.

and one final word, Ian. dont, as a beginner, try to take on too many software packages at once:
1. html book
2. fp
3. graphics
thats enough to master..
and come back here for plenty of help
baseball is the best game once you understand it.....

Check the local library before buying, you will find most of the progs you have or may be later interested in getting have books relating too them.

As for learning HTML, you already have access to the best resource already to learn it. The internet. [:D]

Hey people. What can I say about the help and support you have all offered. It has been incredibly useful and has directed me down the right road. If it was left to me I would wallowing in software, books, a heavy credit card and feeling very alone.

I am really glad I joined this forum. Now you will just have to put up with me and my sense of fun I am sorry to say.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier Donkey but fell asleep watching the test match cos it was so exciting.

Dan. Your fast balls are about the same speed as crickets fastest bowlers. Anyway the odd mile an hour doesn't matter when they are flying around your ears. Honours even there I think. ( Managed to keep that response clean and not dissolve into smuttiness.)

I beg to differ - they do! Australia's Jeff Thompson was recorded bowling at 99.70 miles per hour.

I started off with asking advice for software and thought it would get a good discussion going. Little did I realise that included in this advice would be comments on Baseball, a lengthy discussion on Cricket, now Kitka is moving it on to incarnations.

This is great reading and shows a good sense of humour by all participants. Very enjoyable.

Now my favourite sport is Football. You know the one which is played with the feet and popular all over the world. Discuss.
