snyderdk -> Perl and Front Page 98 (4/2/2001 20:45:00)

I am trying to run Perl in my Front Page Web. I can not get it to run the programing. I get error messages which all appear to direct toward permissions.

YES I HAVE: Front Page Extentions, CGI-Bin, Perl5 installed on the server.
I have edited the vti_txtextensions to: "vti_textextensions:SX|.*.txt.bas.c.h.pl.cgi."

I am using a UNIX Platform..

My Form seems to be functioning ok but it will not let it write to the ".pl" file I need it to.

MY QUESTIONS:
How do you set directory (folder) and Page (File) Permissions in Front Page?

How do I change the CHMOD to 777 (or equivellant to)with Front Page?

Where do I create a New Folder (directory) to insure it be uploaded to my "Basepath".

Any Help to any or all of my questions will be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU
Dave

You don't - Use telnet or WS_FTP

See above

Same answer. You'll need to telnet to your server and use the "touch" command to create a directory and the "CHMOD" to change permissions. Or use WS_FTP and do the same.

Gil Thank You, But I have tried using FTP an when you use FTP with Front Page it messes up the Front Page extentions and then the other forms, etc. dont work correctly, you then have to reset the Front Page extentions which resets the permissions. But I used Cute FTP I guess I didnt think there was a difference between Cute Ftp and Ws-ftp, but I will try the telnet suggestion.

THANK YOU very much for your help

"FTP" doesn't mess up the extensions - FTPing FP files that use the extension is what messes them up. You can safely FTP non-extension pages/files and you can connect with FTP and set premissions with out damaging the extensions. Telent is the preferred way, so if you are familiar with telenet that's the way to go...

Gil Thank You Your Help it is Really Appreciated

Ok I can see how to make a new directory in the basepath using Ftp.. Thank You

The Telnet totally confusses me..

Is it ok to make the directory and pages within Front Page and Publish them and then use FTP to change the permissions? OR should I NOT put them in my front page web and upload them by ftp?

WHAT I AM DOING:
I have a form that needs to write to a ".pl" and uses a ".pm" to execute, etc.
The ".pl" ".pm" and a ".txt" (error code) are located in a directory. (nothing else in the directory) I Need the directory to have "write Permissions" and ".pl" to be chmod 777

I feel like I am missing something.. I am making it more difficult than it should be ?

I know someone else using the exact same things, BUT! does not use Front Page and it took him about 3 minutes to incorporate into his site. I have about 100 hours (Literally) into this thing...
PLEASE, PLEASE MORE HELP!!

I assume you have the perl files in a cgi-bin? Just FTP to that directory and chmod to what you need - navigate to any files that need premissions set and chmod them. None of that should have any effect on the html pages you "Publish" using FP.
