Been Too Long - Hit Me w/ your Opinions - 1/26/2005 11:30:25
http://www.StartRemodeling.com

I make a solid living from this site and it keeps me from getting a REAL JOB, but it's ( 3600 pages ) busy!

Tips are APPRECIATED!

You need to check out the index page in Firefox. The main content has a large white gap at the top and is overlaying content further down the page.

I had a look at your code and WOW! Code bloat plus. Have a look into learning a bit of CSS and use it for fonts, font sizes, colour etc and you'll be able to reduce the size of the file down to a tiny fraction of what it is now.

Hi RemodelingGuy

Way too busy and way too much information, but then again, if it's working and you're making a living from this, and you really have enough information to fill 3600 pages, then i guess by padding it out it'd be 7200 pages long.

One thing i noticed first off is that there's just too many links all over the place. I'm not into home remodeling but if i was, i think i'd be overwhelmed by "where should i click first".

Perhaps you could use a drop-down menu to categorise all these links, neaten the front page up a bit at least so people won't be confused once they get to your site.

Another thing i noticed was that after clicking a few links then returning to the home page, there was no indication of which pages i'd been to...with so many links and pages within the site i think this would help with people not becoming confused.

I like the colours you've used for the side menu, except for the word moldy being green and italic. You also have the word FREE highlited in yellow twice but only one is bold (I prefer it not to be bold). I'm not that keen on your banner, i'd be tempted to do something with a different colour background so people know that the side menu and banner are the same on each page and all they really have to look at is the other information on each page.

If you really wanted the site to be more visibly appealing, i'd trash all the different coloured text on the pages and stick to a theme, blue, yellow and white if you like as this is what you've already used for the navigation.

Thats all i can think of, hope it helps.

Nicole

RemodelingGuy

your pages load really fast on a dial up connection

the css would save time for future growth
it would be a huge project to convert what you have now
unless someone else knows a quick way to do it

i agree with Nicoleoz about excess info (thats just a first impression)
after clicking through for a while it gets easier
what sort of feedback do you get from clients?

one more note, i found you on a google search with the keyword "kitchen remodeling" you were on the second page, thats good, i check my site often and it takes a more detailed search unless i have changed something recent

If I was struck by "toxic black mold" and I only had two hours to live to find a solution and came to your web site for help.....

I'd die.

If I was savvy enough to understand the problem, knew the buzzwords and could try to pre-plan for the problem, then this is where I'm coming.

I'm not sure who your market is.

And I'm not sure that they know it either when thye come to your site. If your making a decent living on this, then most excellent.

Two words.....SITE MAP

i found a lot of info in two clicks. one to buy the product, and one to go to "mold education".

not bad really.

I am such a idiot! I thought people were being kind of mean when they kept putting in
skip matthewsremodeling...
(is it so bad you should skip it?)
Then I looked at the site and realized it was his first name!

Is there a 'dummy of the month' award? Where do I apply?

Thomas
