ok - got to buy a new computer as my other one is causing too many headaches. I've alwasy been impressed by pentium - my laptop is a p4 and it is a fast as anything - but it has been a while since I shed some money on a new desktop and i don't know if AMD have caught up with Intel yet.

So whats your advise, AMD or Intel?

Ive always been an intel fan - for no other reason that thats what was required to run the first version of quake [:D]

I'm a big fan of AMD processors. Every one that I've worked with has been faster than it's Intel counterpart (or at least felt that way)

I like AMD's direction on 64 bit processors and I don't think they face the same legal threat in the caching lawsuit that Intel does... could be mistaken on that.

Here's what I've read or heard:

AMD is better for gaming (slight advantage) and usually more tweakable (overclocking, etc). They tend to be faster and run cooler than similar P4's

That being said, I bought a P4... :p

I think it comes down to price point... get the most for your buck.

You really can't go wrong with either one.

The truth is, AMD are ahead of Intel in the processor market. Yes Intel have the HT technology, bt AMD also have CT technology, and AMD have 64 bit processors whereas Intel don't.

I stick with Intels as I have had a bad experience with AMDs in the past, but I know a few people who swear by AMDs.

I'm currently running a P4 smoothly at both 2.4 and 3.6Ghz...=)

I bought a P4 Prescott recently. I have a friend who had a lot of trouble with an AMD, whereas I personally don't know anyone having problems with Pentiums. It is a flimsy bias I guess.

I think it's probably the other way around Eli. I've been running with AMD for a few years now without any problems. I would advise staying away from the top of the range models and you should be fine.

It's important to support AMD, a creator of great products, to keep the prices reasonable. As Bobby says:

AMD is rated better than Intel based on benchmarks. AMD used to be VERY POOR processors, that is why many businesses went to Intel for its "strength". AMD has finally produced a very good CPU, and are now taking over Intel.

I read a lot about this info over at www.anandtech.com that explains a lot about the differences between the two. Where Intel and AMD tested close, were just on a few tests, the rest AMD apparently performed just a little beter, or a LOT better than the Intel chip.

I purchased an intel p4 about 7 months ago, I LOVE it. It is really fast, and works great. These benchmarks show only a couple second differences, but when testing that actually shows a large difference. If I knew what I know now, I would have gone with AMD, but to be honest it isn't that big of a deal to me. Both Intel and AMD are VERY stable, AMD is just faster, and with the 64 bit processor, the new windows will run great on it when it comes out in 50 years. (I think there is a beta out for it right now, forget the URL though)

i agree with everything except the cooling. amd's typically run hotter than p4's, not cooler. i have 1 each.

p4 2.4ghz = 35c idle

amd xpm +2600 (2ghz) = 47c idle

the p4 just has the teflon pad or whatever that material is on the heatsink, and they have the heat spreader on top of the die. the amd has arctic silver 5. if i were to put as5 on the p4, it would probably drop a couple more degrees.

performance-wise they're about the same. each does certain things faster than the other.

these days, you really cant go wrong with either one. before i bought the 2600 i had an xp2000 that lasted all of a month or so, whereas i have a p2 400mhz that i've had for 6 years and it's still going strong. now it was most likely user error that fried it, which is why i decided to give them another shot, and haven't been disappointed yet.

yeah, im just talking about my 2 machines. and if we're talking about price vs. performance, then amd wins hands down.

i paid $160 for the p4, and i paid $95 for the amd. nearly half the price yet nearly identical performance. it's hard for me to give a fair comparison between the 2 because of each machine's setup. the amd doesnt have nearly the amount of programs installed on it that the p4 does, so naturally it boots windows faster. on the other hand the p4 has better hardware in it (better vid card, more ram etc).

im sure given identical hardware, the amd would smoke the p4 in almost everything. mostly i notice where the p4 shines is in multitasking. both will load, let's say photoshop, in about the same amount of time. but alt+tab'ing to another app or closing it and doing something else, the p4 wins.

anyway, that's why i said i agree with most everything (except the cooling) about amd outperforming the p4. ;-)

remember back when there were 286s, 386s,486, 486 sx, pentium 75s, pentium 90s.etc etc? thats when processors really really mattered - it may happen again who know but last few years- getting a fairly up-to-date one , even mid to low price, is more than adequate for most users..except, of course, gamers and real high end graphics

The one thing that is missing...

What do you plan on using this for? Games, applications? What OS do you really want to run?

I think that is what will make the difference for which is better suited FOR YOU.

Mmmmmmmmm....

AMD64 3400+, 4GB PC3200 and Gentoo Linux, baby........

You'll never find a faster or better performing single processor combination. At least until the next round of processors come out...

you know that a good point - and after thinking about it I decided to go for a Dell P4. They had a great deal, and i'm no gamer so its only business software and graphics that i use it for,

Bingo. It's what I tell everyone who calls me on upgrades. They spec a Uber system when all they do is browse, read e-mail, and maybe run office.

Now if gaming, well all bets are off. Also image manipulation seems to rely heavily on the processor.

My ideal PC setup is to have one PC dedicated to each task...

1 for Graphical Work (Bryce, Photoshop etc)
1 for Web Development (Dreamweaver, FrontPage, GoLive etc)
1 for Testing Dynamic Webs (ASP & PHP, MsSQL & MySQL)
1 for Gaming
1 for purely playing Audio, kinda like a jukbox
And one for Burning CDs/DVDs

That's an expensive way to go, but that what I would like if I had the cash, of which I don't.

I mainly use Intel, but AMDs have brought themselves backup over the years, and in the near future, I will be rebuilding an AMD system, and building a new AMD system, so I'll see how they go...

Have been an AMD person for last 5 years and 4 systems had great luck with all of them.

Of course may be heavily biased since I lived in Austin for over 20 years and AMD is a major employer there.

Yeah it really doesn't matter if you get AMD or pentium. If you are looking to get a new computer and can wait a year I would highly suggest it. If you are a windows user the next release will be out by next year. Additionally I think you will see some great new chips coming out supporting 64bit that are inexpensive. I know for my next chpset I am going 64 bit or dual 32/64 so I can run both.
