Regarding IP addresses - 1/31/2005 11:12:20
For an IP address of say, 65.123.456.789..............

Which numbers in the string indicate the physical location of the server.

And is there a chart somewhere that translates the numbers to the actual city of origin of that IP address.

Couldn't find a clear answer thru Googling.

Thanks

You won't find an answer. No part of the IP address gives the physical/geographicla location of the machine.

I could take this PC now, with it's IP address, move to another country, and the IP address would stay the same, until I renew the IP address itself

Or you can trace it.

The IP block is typically assigned to a provider, so 65.123.456.xxx could be used by an ISP in Colorado
A whois on the IP normally reveals a geographical location

The standard practice is to use command prompt:

Start>>Run

Enter cmd if on 2k/XP/2k3
Enter command if on 9x/Me

Click ok

Enter the following:

ipconfig /all

That will give you the current IP address of the PC, if at all.

If you're behind a router you may only see your local IP settings tho...

The only time I've ever needed my IP address is when I'm using VNC... and then I just hover over the VNC icon in my tray and it tells me the IP addy...

In this case use trace route and the second address shown is the router.

Take care,
