Need new editor... - 2/2/2005 13:49:40
Hi all

With my new PC came the shocking revelation that the used copy of Photoshop 6 that I've been playing with has become scratched to the point that it will no longer install.

Since I can't find any deals (online or otherwise) even close to what I got it for I'm investigating alternatives.

I like Gimp ( www.gimp.org ) for a free editor it's great...

Paint Shop Pro 9 is pretty good too....

But neither of them produce an image like photoshop could... at least not without a lot of extra work.

I'm wondering about Photoshop Elements 3.0

Anybody here use the Elements version or ever compare it to the full PS suite?

I can't find a download trial anywhere. I'm probably going to go buy it anyway, since it can't be any worse than PSP 9 and it's $30 cheaper if I get it at Costco...

Any feedback is appreciated

<edit>
I'm a gonna download the Fireworks trial and see if I like it... been a few versions since I've played with it...

Corel Photo Paint
IMO does everything photoshop will do - Much easier user interface.
I use version 8 you could probably pick up a copy for about $50.

Bobby, have you got the new machine networked with some older machines where you might be able to share the cd drive? I've found that some of my, ahem, older copies of software can't be read in newer drives. If I can use a shared drive (or re-burn the copy using a more up to date burner) I can get things to install. Just a thought.

As to software thoughts, I'm coming to really like PSP 9 (at least for photo work).

I've never tried Corel... might have to give that a shot.

Mike, my disk is pretty ragged. The topside label is barely visible anymore and the data side looks like my kids were using it for a frisbee...

I tried reinstalling it on the old machine, just so I could use it still (uninstalled it prior to trying it on the new box) but it didn't work there anymore either...

:(

Paintshop is a fine program... but I don't think it creates as crisp and refined an image as Photoshop... also I do some print work (not just web stuff) and PS is head and shoulders better there.

Sigh, maybe when the kids stop driving me into the poor house with college tuitions and other necessities (cars) I'll be able to scrape up the green to get a copy. Of course by then my eyes'll probably be so bad I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.:)

You could also try taking it to the local video shop - they can quite often resurrect old cd/dvd's

Try here - scroll down to the elements link (it didn't like me adding the bookmark:)). Must be a recent change, it was still for 2.0 a week or so ago.

Mike,

You're the devil... :)

I grabbed it and the Photoshop CS trial too... :)

... and I was just popping by here to post how much I have started to really warm up to the Gimp since I didn't have Photoshop to go running back to.

Gimp ain't no Photoshop, that's for sure. But the more I use it the easier I'm finding my way around. I think once I get a handle on it I might just stick with it for a while.

'Course... now I have two Adobe offerings to... um... ponder... :)

Anyway, here's a link to "Groking the Gimp" a book / website / download that gives you all kinds of good pointers on how to do certain things. They don't charge you to read it online, or to download the HTML version. The printed copy is nice too.
