PayPal/Bandwith Problem? - 2/2/2005 14:00:40
I will try to keep this as brief is possible, but I'm really confused. My small website (www.stinkypets.com) has one Buy It Now button from PayPal. My business is steady and predictable, having about the same traffic and purchases every day. Back in October when PayPal was having all that trouble, my business fell to almost nothing--customers couldn't get through to PayPal. Then, this happened again for a couple of days in December, and now it's been happening again over the past week or so. The reason I know it's not just a normal business fluctuation is because I am having customers emailing me saying they can't get the link to work to PayPal. Some of these customers have PayPal accounts, so I know that their computer IS able to access PayPal normally (i.e., it's not a cookie problem). I have contacted PayPal numerous times about this, and I usually just get the runaround. Today, though, I spoke with a rep in tech support who told me that it could be one of two things: 1. PayPal's servers ("They're trying to set up more servers across the country to handle all the traffic.") 2. My host, Geocities. When I said "Geocities", the rep went "Ohhhh, well why didn't you say so? That's your problem." I told him that I have a "premium" account with Geocities (not the free account), and that I have 10GB of bandwith. My average monthly data transfer is 841 MB (I think that's the right conversion--whatever it is, it's about 1% of the bandwidth I'm allotted). He kept on with the Geocities problem and said that I should consider switching hosts to see if it cleared up the problem. I asked who I should go with, and he proceeded to direct me to his own hosting site. Hmmm... Can anyone shed some light situation for me. I'm really such a novice, so I don't know what to do. Thanks for your time, Christy

Spooky, Thank you for taking a look at this. Can you spell out your 2nd post for me? I'm not grasping what you mean. I see what you mean when I scroll over the PayPal button on the Order page. I see that a http:/// comes up. I thought that in Frontpage I just inserted a table and then inserted the code that I got from PayPal for my Buy It Now button. Is this the button that you're referring to? Sorry to be dense here. Christy

Spooky, Thank you for your time and expertise on this. I fixed the code. One last question, if I can trouble you. Why would this code error allow some customers to make it through to PayPal and some not? Thanks so much. Christy

Spooky, Many, many thanks. Wow, my site does look different with Firefox. So thanks for the heads up on this as well. A beginner's mistake to be sure. Thanks for your continued attention today. I sincerely appreciate it. Christy
