Can you help with popups? - 4/8/2001 21:47:00
What code or method do I use to do popups on my site? eg a popup to subscribe to an ezine or get a report, when someone leaves your site. Here's an eg of what I mean: http://www.KillerClassifiedAds.com go to the site scroll down to the end and click on the order here...a window will pop open with other options in it. If you now close the window and leave the site another window will pop up with an offer of a report...fill in an email address and submit....now you'll see a second window exactly behind the first already open with lots of links in it. Have these pop up methods been effective for you? Please reply ASAP Thank you Herman

The only effect that has for me is to ensure I'll NEVER visit that site again!------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Is there another word for synonym?"

Gil,Thanks for the tip! What are the pros (if any) and cons (maybe alot)of using popups? The friend I am doing the site for believes in them, so may have to advise him. Also, what code would I insert if I use a popup and can I use it with FP? Thank you Herman The only effect that has for me is to ensure I'll NEVER visit that site again! [/QUOTE]

This generator will make the pop up script for you: http://javascript.internet.com/generators/popup-window.htmlThese pop ups are very effective at making me become annoyed and leave the site also, I agree with Gil. Pop-ups have a place, if they open with some ancillary information which the user needs but which does not warrent leaving a page, or perhaps with an enlarged image or something like that. But those that pop up to say "fill in this" or "see that" serve more to annoy than anything else. I would be interested to know how effective they are, a study or something on how often people do as they are told by a pop up. I think a lot of people - in common with me - never even see what is in them since I tend to close unexpected pop ups before they have even fully loaded. ------------------ Katherine InKK Design LinKKs - Kilkenny's Online Magazine -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Dogs have owners, cats have staff!"

I agree with Katherine. If you are using pop-ups for a specific reason - to give the user more information should they choose to see it - you will be fine. But force feeding people the info through pop-ups is just sick and wrong. Marr

Thanks Katherine for the resourceI agree with Marr, that popups are good when requested, however the friend I am doing the site for believes a pop up upon entering(newsletter) and another when leaving (a report) suits what he wishes to market. So I will probably go with "the customer is always right" even though I made some suggestions against annoying popups. What can one say? Regards Herman
