golfer -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/24/2005 8:37:19)

Sorry Labs. Can't get my head round as to why someone would want smaller font.

People who have difficulty reading normal font have special systems that are specifically designed to help them. There are very few sites that offer font size choice so it is a bit of over-kill.

One of my sons has difficulty reading and writing (fortunately intelligent and got a first class honours degree) but he had his own speaking systems to assist. Writing - well the spell checkers just didn't work. His mum and dad became really good at it.

Am I missing the point here with this debate.

Ian

No not at all Ian.

What I want to do is to create a very userfriendly site for people. I spoke to a guy at the learning difficulties dept and have looked at all the software they have Jaws is a good one, zoom text and supernova. I have been looking into solutions as what to do and he said he will get students to test it for me, to see if it reads well and will test it himself too, as im rebuilding the site its a good time to consider accessibility.

hmmmmmmmmm considering what your saying about the smaller font - I think its incase you go too big - not sure

d a v e -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/24/2005 9:00:20)

i think the font thing is a nice touch but not necessary, except for IE which can' resize pixels/points. points are for print not for the web. better to use ems or percentages. e.g if you set your body size as 76% (avoids nasty surpries in IE) then everything in relation to that such as td {font-size: 90%;}

d a v e -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/24/2005 9:02:20)

p.s. you're boss is a git! :)

Lucky your in Finland d a v e he might just come after you [;)]

I think Im going to keep the feature in just incase we get asked the question. How have you made the site more friendly for users with learning difficulties???

Actually OF members how would you answer a question like that?? what I mean is if your site went up for inspection what features etc would you include i suppose this is what im trying to find out for my site.

golfer -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/24/2005 9:24:33)

Sorry Labs. Got it now.

As I don't pay you and the boss does (I hope) his views count. So one it is.

Still think this is Learning Disability overkill in big way. Are we going to have to design colour choices in our webs to cater for people with colour blindness. In my experience you give people with learning difficulties what they need on an individual basis to manage their lives themselves.

May agree with Dave but I'm in the UK so won't comment.

To become even more contentious why don't the pages speak to your visitors. The blind will not see even the largest font. So now you are only catering for people with restricted vision.

Sorry about all this Labs but I have been involved in the disability area in the past.

Ian

Ian there is no need to be sorry. I really value your opinion and i need feedback from ppl who have actually been involved in the disability area. Im going to fight this with the powers that be so wish me luck will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

If I have upset you in anyway I didn't mean too.

Whats wrong with me Im upsetting everyone [:(]

golfer -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/24/2005 17:41:56)

Not upset at all Labs. I am (I think) a naturally polite person and I say sorry when I do not wish to offend you.

You know. Stiff upper lip and all that old bean.

You have a good site planned out and it would be a pity to over complicate it with various complex add-ons.

labs123 -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 5:56:02)

As long as we cool. [;)]

Ian just been reading up and researching this subject to bits. From what I read I think im bound by Law to put add ons to the site as we are considered an "educational institute". I thought the following articles would be useful for anyone in a similar situation to me.

Article 1
Article 2
Article 3

labs123 -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 6:02:35)

ooops missed Article 3

Ian my hands are tied [&o]

labs123 -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 6:50:13)

The more I research the more I find Article 4.

I think Im going to stop now before my head explodes [&:]

funny how the senda site for example fails the cynthia test (on some obvious things like alt tags - doh!)

Hi Labs. I will let you be the judge of what you need to do to comply as you are an educational body. Those articles will be helpful I am sure to those who build websites for educational bodies in future.

Well it seems that you are now ready to complete your site. Good luck.

I think the word you were looking for was hypocrites. [;)]

At long last I have a solution. "Pictures need ALTs, table layouts are best avoided, pale backgrounds" TeamLeader IT

Im going to keep it simple and go for design 1 throughout the site, got to make a stand sometime in your life.

d a v e if i get sacked can i come work in finland????????

d a v e -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 9:43:13)

yeah sure - find me a nice job as well ;)

Hi Ian. Im going to keep it simple and keep to design 1. I don't think making the larger/smaller text more obvious is the key but I have to include it somewhere. I was looking into speech using CSS and colour wheels and things but not anymore.

So thats what im going to do go with what I think is right. [:)]

golfer -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 11:21:55)

Go for it.

I will come to Finland with you when your boss ask for the next impossible task. Ha ha. Will let you know when we arrive Dave.

Take care. Speak soon.

golfer -> RE: 1 or 2 (2/25/2005 11:29:44)

They will be naturally jealous.

I will try and keep it a secret in future though.
