import website into Front Page - 2/5/2005 8:24:59
My site was done by a web design company and I've been making a lot of changes with a plain html editor. Now I want to use FP 2002.

How do I get my site into my FP program? I vaguely remember seeing something about getting your site onto your hard drive but can't find it now.

Thanks!

Use the FP publish facility to publish from your host back to your hard drive.

I'll go try that. I never heard of it so I'll look through FP's menus and help.

thanks!

I used various search terms in FP 2002 and came up with the below. Before I do it, is this correct? I don't understand the last part, about subwebs. I want this to be a completely separate job from the websites I do have in FP.

Instructions from FP help:

Import a web site from a web server

Click From Web, and then in the Location box, type the complete URL of the starting page you want to import. The starting page can be any page in the web, not just the home page.

Click Next.
Choose one or more of the following:

Specify the number of subdirectories beneath the root

Select the Limit to this page plus check box, and then select a number in the levels below box. By default, this check box is selected, and the levels below box specifies 5.

Specify the import limit in kilobytes.

In the Limit to box, type the total amount, in kilobytes, to limit the import to. The default is 500 KB.

Specify whether you want only text and image files or other files as well.

To import only text and image files, select Limit to text and image files.

Click Finish.

Note If you import a disk-based web site into an existing disk-based web site, Microsoft FrontPage adds the files and folders only to the current disk-based web site. It does not create a new disk-based subweb.

No, that's importing a web and you'll be lucky if it all comes down.

You need publish.

There are some instructions HERE

Thanks for those links. I also went to the tutorials section and found "reverse publish" which shows how to do this, also.

http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/fp_techniques/reverse-publish.htm

I'm pasting the instructions here from the two links you gave me, so others can find it fast, too. I didn't have a hard drive crash so it didn't occur to me to search for that term.

File/open web/type the url of your site in the folder name box (http://www.yoursite.com). You should be prompted to enter your ID/Password. Once the site is open, select File/publish web and then point to your hard drive (c:\something or browse to the location).

or same thing:

Follow these steps exactly:

In FrontPage

Open the (host) web by clicking " File - Open"

In the " File name" box type " http://www.yourdomain.com"

Enter your logon & password when prompted

Once the site is open in FrontPage click " File - Publish web"

For the "publish to" address, enter a destination on your hard drive

example: C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents\Host Copy

Once "published down" you will have a complete copy of the web for backup and/or republishing purposes.

===========

"published down" means downloaded to your hard drive.

Still need help, please.

I disabled all programs so that nothing was running in the background and I did not have anything else running except FP.

I followed the instructions explicitly and everything was going great until, halfway through, FP hung up for an hour. I had no choice but to click on "cancel".

I did a cold boot and tried again and it's been hung up in a folder for two hours. It's tossing files to the folder, but nothing is happening. The folder it is hung up in is different from when I tried the first time.

Any suggestions?

I have to admit I don't use it but I can only suggest that it may be your virus checker.

The other thing you can try is using ftp to bring it down but make sure you get all the folders and files.

If you don't have an ftp client go get filezilla.

I had disabled the firewall and made the AV program go snooze. Oh, well.

I use WS_FTP Pro so I'll do it that way.

Thanks!

I transferred the files with WS_FTP Pro and tested FP by revising one page slightly. FP insisted on publishing all the pages back to the server. Nothing's ever simple!

That's Microsoft for you. Why go underboard when you can go totally overboard! :)

What's weird is that the two pages I updated as a test are updated online but FP is still "processing Web Updates". Like it forgets it has to stop sometime.

I'll just cope with this.

Thanks for the help!

You can always give up with FP and use FTP. The only thing is you'll need to be careful that you upload all the files as some are hidden in FP. You can see them in FTP though.

Hiya Steph

Might want to get FPSE installed before you try to use FP:)
