OutFront banner thingy - 2/5/2005 13:14:06
Couple of questions....
Is the OutFront graphic at the top of this page considered a page banner?
I have something at the top of my website, www.minutemanauction.com, but it is simply set up as a picture, not a banner. I created it using Publisher, but I would like to make a better version. I can make a banner, but only in fairly plain text, I cannot use my picture I made as a banner. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tonia

Could be...

In my opinion a "banner" is simply an image or set of images that may or may not contain your logo...

:)

You can use any image you want as your "banner"

Though, like the one above, it takes a little graphical talent to put one together... :)

I think people tend to get mixed up between Page Banners and Banner Ads.

Banner Ads are those moving and flashing things that freebie hosts tend to slap across the top of pages. You need special bits of software to create those.

I'd rather you didn't though. I hate them.

LOL... I don't want to make a banner ad, I promise. What I would like to do is have a heading at the top of each of my pages that is the same, to give the website a more uniform look. I think I need to learn more about using themes. I can get themes to work, but not as well as I would like. What I have been doing instead is designing my index page, then saving it as a seperate new page, then changing that particular page as I need, almost like making my own template.

I prefer doing that to FP's themes

Though there are some sites that utilize FP Themes decently, most of the time they are cheezy and rather cheap looking. I wouldn't use them. You're better off designing your own.

By saving each page as a new one and changing the text to create a website, you're possibly creating more work for yourself not only now but also possibly in the future. Try learning to use the include feature if you can, that'll mean that if you come back to make a chance to part of your banner, footer, or side menu in the future, it'll change across the site and you won't have to change each page individually. I made that exact mistake with a 700 page website ages ago, lol!

But by also doing this, you'll decrease the size of each file in your site.

I wish there was a to design a generic page much like my home page only with out the text, then just save it as a theme. If anybody knows how to do that, please share. :)
Thanks for your input!

You know, I did create my own theme once in FP, many moons ago...but I honestly forgot how I did it, because I just...um...never bothered with it again. LOL. However, it must have been in the help files or I wouldn't have done it or even thought about doing it.

Have you tried looking at any sub-headings in the help file under Themes?

What I have done in the past is create a plain page and named it as a template....and then when I wanted to make a new page, I'd open the "template.htm" page and go to HTML view, copy everything...open new document....go to HTML view and paste everything over the existing HTML.

In fact I still do that with several sites that I created - BUT as Nicole stated, you're in for a LOT OF WORK when /if your site grows to more than a handful of pages...cause if you decide to give the site an overhaul, you will then have to redo EVERY SINGLE PAGE (as I'm learning with a realtor who wants a facelift on his site, that I originally designed, never dreaming he'd want to CHANGE it....)

Another option you could use that is really easy and I have had success with is Shared Borders in Front Page. You can have borders on the top, bottom, and both sides of the page, or just the top and bottom, or just the sides, or all around, or on three sides...and they would remain static. You can fill them with a background image and have your header, footer, and navigation in them, and when you want to change anything, you only have to change it on one page.

For example, on THIS page , the "shared borders" are the top, left hand, and bottom parts of the page with the swirly background and buttons. I can change the entire look of the site just by editing those borders on only one page...and if I need to remove or add a link, I only have to do it once, rather than a gazillion times.

Am I explaining this properly? It works similar in principle to the Includes that Nicole mentioned, but they do require microsoft server extensions (pretty much standard fare now with 99% of webhosts). You can't mess with the HTML in them, which is the biggest drawback....but for my purposes they have done what I wanted to do very well.
