Alexa showing link, customer threating me, please help - 2/5/2005 19:02:14
I have got one person who I did some work for and tried to help them out by putting a link to them many months ago, maybe a year or more.
After we parted ways I removed their links on the sites I had it on.
Now they are writing me claiming their Alexa linking report is showing links to them from one of my sites and they are threatening me that I have to remove it and for the life of me I can not see their link on the site they are claiming it is on.
First of all, can I get in trouble if I do have a link to her somewhere hiding that I don't see so I can remove it?
I repeatedly requested they email the url of the offending page and they just reply with something about "my Alexa shows your site linking to me, even had a picture of the site and I want it removed now!"

I tried to go onto Alexa and see this but I don't have the their toolbar and wont install their toolbar, I don't know what the heck they are talking about, does Alexa cache links? what the heck is going on here and what I can do about this?
Can I get in trouble for this somehow?
They are claiming they are going to contact my client and complain to them on top of this.

Thanks for any advice or links to show me what is going on and maybe what my rights are if any?

linking TO another site is part of the inherent nature of the net and doesnt require anyone's permission - they put a site out their publicly and you can link to it if you please. The exception (and i learned about it recently here at Outfront) is "hotlink" - that is where someone links to your site to display your picture or other content ON THEIR SITE. for example, posts an image onto you site where the image resides on your server.
would be hotlinking to my site and using my content and my bandwidth.

Besides, the US Constitution requires "due process" which includes notice. They "notified" you of a problem but when you claimed it wasntt true and asked them to be specific, they refused - thats not due process.

They sound like idiots

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the reply and clarification and yes, they are idiots and that is why I wont work with them.
I searched the site they complained about, it has no link to them, I offered to remove the link claim is there if they send me the link to the offending page.
As I stated, they claim they cant do that and that it is only showing up in Alexa. I went into Alexa, found the page with the link for their webmaster to make "corrections" and I am done with them.

Thanks again for the clarification.

Frank

PS, guess that local search thread was a bit much as no one seems to have wrote any replies so I guess I will keep my blabbering to myself. lol

Hi,
Alexa is a "tool" that some call good, some call evil spyware.
If you Google, "what is Alexa" you will find various articles with various view points. You can install it like the Google toolbar and it is supposed to give you information like traffic reports, ranking reports etc. but from what I have seen and been told by people that live and breathe that sort of thing, is it has very limited use and that many opinions is not worth the aggravation.
Some people, like my complaintant, incorrectly try to use it to gauge some things like incoming links, traffic, etc.
One big problem with it is that it will only measure site visitors that have it installed on it, among other issues.
For that reason I and others feel that it is only really helpful if your clientele, etc. are the type to have it installed and use it.
I personally stick with the Google toolbar for now but I am also watching the evolution of the other toolbars like Yahoo's new one etc. as the browser and search engine wars heat up to another level of the coming year.
It should prove to be real interesting as they evolve and vie for market share. googles ipo and last quarter earnings, due in large part to their pay per click models have all in that market clammering for a piece of that pie.
