Giomanach -> RE: Windoze XP, Automatic Updates & Wireless Networks (2/14/2005 12:42:34)

Brian Might not be under the same circumstances, you see, the modem for my net connection is downstairs, and the wireless signal has to travel through 2, maybe 3, cavity/solid brick walls, and I get about 70-90% reception through the USB adapter (mainly b'cos it's sat on the floor under the desk). I have WAU set to notify only, but I let it download some of the security patches for XP, and it was pulling them in too fast, and the more work USB adapters do on a wireless network, the hotter they get, and as is standard for most peripherals these days, they have a temperature limit. I picked up the adapter afterwards and it was literally cooking - unplugged it, let it cool of, plugged it back in, and it worked. I'm double firewalled(ZA and router firewall), so it's not a hacker. It must have been the amount af data coming through, as I can run Halo online without it over-heating and cutting out on me... Usually I just let the WAU sit there and look ugly as it is, and the USB adapter has never gotten so warm, only when the WAU kicked in, did it heat up and cut out. Hope that's clearer Dan
