Tad -> Are there any red flags in this code . . . (2/12/2005 16:56:00)

that might keep me from getting ranked highly in Google. This page
ranks 5th for the search term "remote control trucks" in Yahoo, yet
it is 67th in Google. If anyone could just give this a quick scan and
let me know if anything negative jumps out, I would appreciate it.

Thank you, but I've already exhausted those sources. I am getting really frustrated. I have one page that ranks 2nd in Yahoo for the search term "canasta strategy," but in Google in ranks 77th. Some sites that rank higher hardly have anything to do with that term. What is going on? Is it possible that Google has penalized me? Every one of my pages is now buried so deep in Google that no one will ever find me. Does Google penalize sites, knocking them to nowheresville, for doing little things they don't like?

I used to get 80% of my traffic from Google. Now, I am getting less than 14%--that is an absolute plummet! And this all happened literally overnight. I've never been so puzzled in all of my life.

Tad, you're not alone. I have one of my sites that is on page 1 for both MSN and Yahoo but on Google I'm not sure what page it gets listed on (too far for me to look through yet). Mine happened within the last month or so too. It was at least listed on page four before.

I will be interested in hearing what you learn.

There was a major update to the Google algo recently. That likely caused your drop, but just saying there was an update does not help...

There is no information that you will ever receive from Google (other than their SERPs) that will help you rank in even a mildly competitive industry. They would rather have you running Adwords - and if your business can't be profitable running ads you have far more trouble than just bad rankings.

Your site -

I don't see enough unique content and back links. While you seem to provide some of the same services/products that the top 10 site provide there is no reason why you should be in the top 10 and one of them not. (except for eBay) I certainly don't mean that in a disparaging way, but can you explain to me why you should be in the top 10?

If you can, you need to get to work and do that exactly on your site because I don't see anything that sets you apart from the others. Tell your visitors why they should buy remote control trucks from YOU (low prices, sales, fast shipping etc are expected). The #1 site has THOUSANDS of quality back links and most others either have a lot of back links or they have decent content and a sound internal linking pattern.

If I were you and wanted to rank for remote control trucks I would create at least 50 unique pages that were related to those terms. I would also buy, borrow, beg or build 200+ quality back links.

How you implement this plan is - well - shall we say the "proof is in the pudding". Google is getting much smarter. Yahoo and MSN are currently easy to rank on. Google can throw you some curves and you can be knocked way down in the rankings by what would appear to be simple things.

Mojo, thanks for the candid analysis. That's what I was hoping for. I have one concern, though. I know the number one company has thousands of backlinks. That company is one of the biggest out there, and I don't expect to be able to compete with them for a long time. So far I haven't had to; we have done very well just using natural ranking.

But look at the #2-4 companies (especially the #3 and 4). These have very few backlinks and nothing special setting them apart from the rest of us. Granted they are sites that only sell that type of product, so thematically they are not diluted (I am slowly phasing out all other product lines so we too can focus on one thing--remote control). But they are relatively small sites with very little text and our PR is the same.

Also, when you talk of backlinks, I want to make sure I understand you correctly. Are you referring to those with whom I have exchanged links, or just anyone linking to me? I think you mean the latter. I have spread out my backlinks and have some linking to each of my product type pages (cars, trucks, boats, airplanes). That is the same with our other product lines. Although this dilutes the links, it seemed to me a better idea for getting each of my category pages ranked (Incidentally, should I avoid sites with less than PR4?). Also, I have heard it's a good idea to fork out the cash to get a backlink from the Yahoo directory because of their PR. Is that still the case?

Finally, you talked about the other companies' "sound internal linking" pattern. I thought my internal linking was pretty well-structured. Were we doing something wrong?

I am going to do exactly as you have prescribed. I will win this battle! And I think getting the whole site focused on one category will help, too, but I don't want to cut the other products lines just yet because I have some quality backlinks going to those pages that are keeping the overall site PR up. Plus, those product lines are making us money. Also, I think that thematic focus will aid us in finding that niche--that something special about our company--to set us apart from the competition. It's just going to take some time.
