Symbols turned to question marks, how to fix? - 2/14/2005 13:03:08
All of a sudden my symbols on any website I open, publish, close with FP2000 turn to question marks when viewed in IE browsers.

I can not figure out why for the life of me.
It does not matter what website so it is either a FP2000 setting or something on my computer.
I Googled this and found few references about it being an issue with my computer.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks
Frank

I am having the exact same problem!! I didn't change anything on my computer or in FP. The symbols view fine in FP, but view as question marks with IE (registered symbol, copyright symbol, degree symbol...all turn to ?). Any help or thoughts out there? It makes my website look ridiculous:)

I even ended up finding TM & Copyright graphics and replaced the now stupifying question marks.
I googled this and came across some posts about it with data base sites and something about a Windows patch but it was way over my head.
I dont think it is in FP and that is either my Windows 2000 Pro OS or my IE but for the life of me I cant find the fix yet so it is graphics for symbols for now.
I will post if I find the fix and please, do the same if you or anyone else finds the fix.
Thanks
Frank

I have spent hours searching for what it is, but haven't come up with anything I 1)understood or 2)seems applicable. I finally just went into FP and just removed the offending questionmarks, and therefore, my symbols as well. I'll post back if I find anything useful...anyone else out there got any ideas?:)

Found this thread in a forum... sounds like the solution but I don't for the life of me know what they are talking about. Is this a server issue? The forum is a server forum, so I would assume so. Anyone out there who can decipher this for a computer illiterate? Thanks. I hope this helps Frank!

Susie:)

The issue is between the host server and the character set and langage meta tags for your pages.

I would tell you to do a mass search and replace for these meta tags, but I know from experience that some versions of FrontPage will change every symbol in your source code to an actual question mark during the search and replace process.

It's safer to just fix this on each page -- one at a time.

Right click on page > Page Properties > Language > Set "Page Language" to "none" > Set "HTML
Encoding" to "Unicode (UTF-8)" > Save > Publish.

I found out the problem is on the hosting server and that by contacting the host they can go in and fix it.

Thanks for everyones help.

Thanks Thomas!! Site is all better now. Thank goodness I don't have a huge website!:) BTW... anyone know why that happened? I don't remember changing any settings in FP.

Your site may have been moved to a new server.
