I concure. As long as it is a deselctable option, OK. If not then I think this would be an issue. Would I ever use it? Heck no. Take care, Brian

I am really surprised by the lack of interest in what Google is doing... maybe it is because so many people are in love with the big G, but the Auto Link feature is just a step or so behind what MS originally proposed. jaybee - you think it is find since the user has to go get it, but what happens if a few years down the road almost everyone has it? Is it still fine? What happens if Google opens up the options a little and anything to do with clothing (not name brands) is made into a link to WalMart.com? Far fetched? Hardly. Auto Link already harms sites. I added it to IE > went to Barnesandnobel.com > and looked up a specific book. I *love* the Auto Link feature so I click it and find a NEW LINK installed on the BN.com page. Clicking this NEW LINK takes me to - AMAZON.COM. I am sure Barnes and Nobel don't appreciate this feature. If you are an affiliate with Amazon or any other book store and you list the books ISBN Auto Link can screw you out of your commission. What is the difference between Auto Link and someone who *purposely* downloads scumware that adds links to *your* site? If it is OK for Google to send visitors to your competition, why is it not OK for smaller companies to do it?

Thre is a lot of silence on this issue around here.... Googlegasims? Anyhow, Barnes and Nobel have suddenly made all the ISBN numbers into links. A preemptive strike of sorts as Googles Adware product - 'Auto Link' - doesn't currently rewrite links. You can still view Google's sneek at booksamillion.com, alibris.com and powells.com.

<quote>I am really surprised by the lack of interest in what Google is doing... maybe it is because so many people are in love with the big G</quote> Not here. I am distancing myself from them. I think betting the farm solely on Google algos are ridiculous. With PPC, genre specific directories they are not the only game in town. I know they send a good percentage of our traffic but who knows what upstart directory or SE will come tomorrow and bump them off the radar? I remember when they were the upstart, then they gathered steam via a great webmaster loyalist base, then they went public. Since then it will be decisions based solely on profitably and I think that will be Gs downfall. However they are in business to make money however be it grey hat (in the middle of ethical and non). It is arrogance like this new tool. They think they should profit from a tool install? I can see no other way around the logic (someone PLEASE show me other motivations). They were around during the heated debates about MS smart tags and yet they rolled this into the tool. I just shook my head when I first read about this. I can not get past this being solely money motivated which is a shame. Would I ban googlebot based on this? No, but once there is a work around to blocking the issue that is raised you can sure bet I will implement it. I'll get down from my soap box, sorry. Take care, Brian

Maybe I don't have an updated tool bar... what am I looking for? The links on the blog were bringing up 404s.

Hi Summer, You will need to update your Google toolbar. There is a feature called Auto Link. Google is defending it by saying people have to click the Auto Link button. It actually says "Show Book Info" when visiting a competitor to Amazon and then provides a link to Amazon when the user clicks it. Nice.
