A widespread shuffle in relevancy scores started appearing in Google around the beginning of February, and the consensus is that major changes have occurred in Google’s ranking algorithm. The weighting of back links appears to have been reduced while the weighting of on page factors appears to have been increased. Many agree that Google has been using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) in it’s algorithm for quite some time, but in this recent change LSI appears to play more of a role in relevancy scoring. In general terms LSI allows for a better understanding of keywords within the larger collection of content on the page.

It's been named Allegra and for many sites it was a death blow.

My God man, how often do the search engines revise their logic and kill someone's business in the process?

Is that why a lot of people diversify across several product markets (to have some stability?) It would seem like most all your time would be spent watching, worrying, and never knowing when the rug was going to be pulled out from under you.

I'm sure its fun when you catch an "updraft", but one thing's for sure: This ain't for wimps and sissies!

Webmaster world has a big thread on this update

I normally do not like listing other forums but I thought it had some good information.

LOL - I love the 'updraft' remark ...

erinatkins - My personal opinion is there is very, very little of any use in that monster thread (maybe zero value). It is mostly emotional. A lot of people crying about their site falling out of the rankings etc...

Spooky -> RE: Google Ranking Algorithm Change (2/18/2005 15:30:34)

I must admit, I read through the thread - and yes - a lot of emotive speculation.
There are certainly fears about what could happen, however the consumer (or apathy) will ultimately win

2 thoughts:
1. with so many people trying to either preserve their high ranking or gain one, why is everyone so surprised when their ranking rises and falls? for one site to move up a notch, someone must go down one - elementary.
2. as they always say - follow the money..... if high ranking sites could be comfortable that they wouldnt fall, what motivation would they have to purchase adwords? If i am in top 5 of page one on natural ranking on the left, what do I care about the paid ads on the right. on the other hand, a few rides down and corresponding "updrafts" (haha) inspires some thought of purchasing ads for stability - and Google makes money.
