RickP -> Search engines - Where's my sites!? (2/20/2005 14:06:33)

I've just been checking up on a few sites, looking for them in Google & Yahoo. These sites have been registerd with these engines and others about two months ago (they are also linked-to from one or two other sites). I can only find them by typing the domain name (but not necessarily the tld) e.g:

medwayart
onthewebnow

This way they appear on Google's first page but with no extract from the site - i.e. no text at all - just the domain name(?) All other searches for these sites (including the obvious!) bring no results at all[:(]

WHY? / (Why Me!?[:(])

What does this mean?

If they don't appear with a keyword search then Google hasn't added them to its index yet. Have you submitted the sites anywhere or are you just waiting for Google to notice you.

Check your visit stats and see if you can find a crawl from googlebot.

Make sure there is text on your page for google to do something with.

Make sure there are HTML links for google to use to spider the rest of the site.

I did a Google link check and it sees no links. I suspect the linking sites aren't indexed either.

Thanks Jaybee for the checks

Looking at stats for...

this one
it gives 17 hits for:
"Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.google.com/bot.html)"

I asume that means that Google has visited the site (?)

Also something called "ia_archiver" has been there too (?)

But it still doesn't show in a google search!

Looking at stats for...

www.onthewebnow.co.uk
I see no visits from Googlebot but I do from MSNBOT and it will show in an MSN search

Now, I have submitted this to Google some while ago (2 - 3 months). It is also linked-to from at least one page that is well indexed and has a Google rank of 3.

Maybe the last one needs more time:
www.medwayart.co.uk

I registered it with G. a few weeks ago and have just linked-to it from other sites.

But I have at least two other site that were okay in Google and now cannot be found[:(]...
www.ukcustomsigns.co.uk
www.marineoils.org

Is the problem that most of these sites do not contain a lot of text? They're mostly image based but at least one page usually has 150 - 250 words.

I submitted most of these to DMOZ too but they don't appear in their directory still after 6-10 weeks!!!

Oh well, thanks again for your reply and help

Dmoz depends on which category you submitted to. Go back to the category and see whether there is an editor listed for it at the bottom of the page. If not, then you have to wait for a top level ed or Greenbuster to get to the category.

Check your google links out with link:www.yoursite.com in the Google search bar.

Sites that have vanished may be due to the change in the Google algorithm at the start of Feb.

You need content and preferably near the top of the page. One page I looked at has bucketloads of Javascript at the top. Get that out into an external js file so that Google gets to the content quicker.

There's a thread in here that allows you to check what Google sees. Run your sites through that.

As I understand it, and Mojo will correct me if I'm wrong, the first sweep of Google makes a note of your site but doesn't do a lot with it. If it's still there on the next sweep then it'll index. It's to prevent temporary sites from getting listed.

Finally go take a good look through www.websiteownerworld.com

Which page do you mean? As I recall, sites that use js do have most of it in external files?

Content near the top??? Would you say therefore that horizontal link bars at the top of pages may not be helpful for optimum indexing purposes?

Re the above... this would make sense of the fact that my (new) sites URLs can be found on Google but no content listed with them. sounds it could be about right to me!(?)

Will look at the other info you reference - thanks

And finally... I don't think you're "trying" at all (ref above your name!) - in fact you've been too kind [:D]

Cheers

As it happens - these sites started to show in Google the next day! - I have inserted some keywords on the page with lots of js at the top - above the js - once again thanks
