Entropy Search Engine - 2/20/2005 15:17:21
Seems that a lot of hosts offer this as a way of putting a search on your site. I was using Atomz but then they loaded the thing with lots of ads so I decided to do a quick switch to Entropy.

Major mistake. It has to be the worst search facility going. I set it up and ran the index, did some tests. Keywords I knew were in there came up blank. The following day some worked, others didn't. Tried a re-index then others stopped working.

I have now switched to a PHP search with a MySQL backend and it's working great and lightening fast.

Avoid Entropy.

Hi there, I'm new to PHP & MYSQL & am not wanting to re-create my current site on a database just yet, so I'm interested in having something similar to Entropy to search my site that I can do quickly & easily..

is there a way to use PHP that it will search keywords on my HTML pages without needing to change them?

Yes, I use the free iSearch script:
http://www.isearchthenet.com/isearch/

It is very simple to set up but you do need to create a mySQL database for it to use.

OH thanks heaps for the tip! My boss is sure to be impressed as he was told it was a huuuge job involving turning the whole site into a database & he wanted it ASAP, I'm installing it now, hope I can work it! :)

My question is: To create a own mySQL database for isearch, we need to create tables and exact columns for isearch to use, I have no idea about these tables' and columns' values and names. Is there any instruction or file to help to create a exact search database for isearch?

If you go to the isearch web site they have support forums that should give you all the answers you need

Hi Terence,

WELCOME to OutFront Forums.

I recently set up iSearch 2.9 on a site and it did not require tables or columns to be created.

Simply create a database and a user. Then edit the config.inc.php file by adding your database name, database user name and password.

After you upload the files to your server, open the admin page, configure the options and click the "spider" button. iSearch will create the tables automatically. :)
